The Narrative Begins Before the Movie Does

“Douglas stars in the thriller as Dan Gallagher, a happily married New York City attorney who is seduced by Alex Forrest (Close) while his wife, Beth (Archer), and daughter are out of town. For Dan, their liaison is a diversion. But for Alex, the end of the affair is the beginning of a nightmare for all of them.”

On the surface, there is nothing particularly remarkable about the paragraph. It is essentially a press release boiled down into a few sentences and handed to the media.

But look closely at the language.

Dan Gallagher is “seduced” by Alex Forrest.

That word matters.

Because buried inside this completely innocuous piece of promotional copy is the basic narrative that Fatal Attraction would spend the next two hours constructing: Dan is a happily married man who makes a mistake. Alex is the dangerous woman who seduces him, refuses to let him go and ultimately threatens his family.

The more I think about Fatal Attraction, the more that narrative bothers me.

Not because the movie is secretly some misunderstood masterpiece.

Quite the opposite.

I think Fatal Attraction is a cheap, sleazy, silly thriller that somehow managed to convince generations of viewers that it was saying something profound about marriage, sexuality and the consequences of infidelity.

And that may be the most fascinating thing about it.

The Happily Married Man Who Just Happens to Cheat

Fatal Attraction stars Michael Douglas as Dan Gallagher, a successful New York attorney who appears to have everything.

A beautiful wife. A young daughter. A nice home. A successful career.

So why, exactly, does this happily married man decide to sleep with another woman?

That question becomes particularly important because Alex Forrest, played by Glenn Close, cannot understand it either.

Dan meets Alex while his wife and daughter are away. They have sex. Dan considers it a one-night mistake and intends to return to his normal life.

Alex does not.

When Dan attempts to end the relationship, Alex becomes increasingly obsessive. When he tries to walk away, she attempts suicide. Dan, terrified that his infidelity will be exposed, stays with her and helps cover up what happened.

That decision only deepens her obsession.

Soon Alex is stalking him, manipulating him and eventually inserting herself into his family life.

And so the movie becomes a thriller.

Will Dan tell his wife what he has done?

Will Alex’s behavior become dangerous?

Will Dan’s family survive the consequences of his decision?

These are perfectly serviceable questions for a thriller.

And that’s what makes the mythology surrounding Fatal Attraction so strange.

This isn’t exactly unexplored territory.

The basic premise belongs to one of the oldest thriller formulas imaginable: person has affair, affair partner becomes obsessed, obsession turns dangerous.

Hollywood would make variations of this story over and over again.

But somehow Fatal Attraction became the movie that defined the entire concept.

Why This Movie?

This is the question I keep coming back to.

Why Fatal Attraction?

Why this movie?

Nearly 40 years later, Glenn Close can still talk about being approached by men who tell her that Alex Forrest terrified them. The character became so culturally entrenched that “bunny boiler” entered the popular vocabulary as shorthand for an obsessive, supposedly unstable woman.

The film was a massive commercial success, eventually becoming one of the biggest movies of 1987. It received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Close. (⁠AFI Catalog)

It wasn’t merely a hit.

It became a cultural phenomenon.

And I genuinely don’t understand why.

I have watched knockoff after knockoff after knockoff built around the Fatal Attraction formula. Some are bad. Some are worse. Most are completely forgettable.

But what continues to surprise me is how little better Fatal Attraction actually is.

Being first certainly helps.

But shouldn’t the original be better than this?

The Great Glenn Close Performance

Glenn Close is the obvious exception.

There are moments when she is absolutely glorious in her willingness to throw away every shred of dignity and restraint.

She commits completely to Alex.

Unfortunately, the movie eventually asks her to stop playing a complicated human being and start playing a horror-movie villain.

And once that switch happens, it never really switches back.

Alex goes from sensual and vulnerable to wild-eyed and terrifying. Her hair gets bigger. Her behavior gets crazier. Her actions become increasingly outrageous.

Eventually, there is barely a human being left underneath the movie’s machinery.

That’s the problem.

There is no real depth to Alex’s pain.

There is no soul to her perceived loss.

We understand that she is obsessed with Dan. We understand that she feels rejected. We understand that she is mentally unstable.

But understanding the mechanics of a character isn’t the same thing as understanding the character.

Close gives Alex considerably more than the screenplay gives her.

And that is why the performance remains memorable even when the character itself becomes ridiculous.

Adrian Lyne Wants to Talk About Sex

Director Adrian Lyne was fascinated by sexual politics.

That much is obvious.

His movies repeatedly return to sex, temptation, infidelity, power and the ways that sexual relationships can disrupt seemingly stable lives.

But fascination isn’t the same thing as insight.

Lyne’s approach is often to ask big questions without necessarily giving those questions much weight beyond the immediate plot.

And Fatal Attraction is full of opportunities for bigger questions.

Why does Dan cheat?

What does his marriage actually mean to him?

What does Alex want from him?

Why does she become so obsessed?

What does infidelity say about the marriage?

What does sexual freedom mean when it collides with responsibility?

What does the movie actually believe about men and women?

These are potentially fascinating questions.

But the movie doesn’t seem particularly interested in answering them.

Instead, it turns the entire situation into a progressively louder thriller.

The big question eventually becomes:

What would you do if you were Dan?

Honestly?

That’s not a particularly interesting question.

Because almost everything that happens to Dan is his own fault.

Dan Gallagher Is Not Exactly a Victim

The movie desperately wants us to sympathize with Dan as Alex’s behavior escalates.

That’s understandable.

Michael Douglas is the protagonist, and once Alex starts attacking his family, the audience naturally wants to see that family protected.

But there is something almost comical about how unsympathetic Dan is.

He cheats on his wife.

He lies about it.

He attempts to hide what happened.

He stays involved with Alex because he’s afraid of the consequences of his own actions.

And then, when everything inevitably explodes, he becomes the terrified family man fighting to protect the life he risked in the first place.

That’s not a victim.

That’s a guy discovering that actions have consequences.

And while I appreciate that Fatal Attraction at least allows Dan to pay a price for his infidelity, the movie ultimately lets him off remarkably easily.

His wife does an enormous amount of the emotional suffering.

His wife is forced into the confrontation.

His wife becomes involved in the violence.

And his wife ultimately has to help clean up the mess.

Dan, meanwhile, gets to emerge from the experience having learned a valuable lesson about cheating.

Congratulations.

Women Be Crazy

This is where Fatal Attraction becomes much more uncomfortable.

Because underneath the thriller mechanics is a very simple message:

Be careful what happens when you step outside the boundaries of marriage.

That isn’t necessarily a bad message.

Infidelity can destroy families.

Cheating can have consequences.

People can make selfish decisions that hurt other people.

All of that is true.

But Fatal Attraction doesn’t really frame Dan’s infidelity as the central moral failure.

Instead, it frames his decision as something that happened to him.

He was seduced.

He couldn’t resist.

He made a mistake.

And then a crazy woman came along and ruined his life.

That’s a very different story.

The AP description is particularly revealing because the language of “seduction” subtly transfers agency away from Dan. He didn’t simply decide to cheat. He was seduced.

And this becomes the movie’s central escape hatch.

Dan is irresponsible, but Alex is dangerous.

Dan cheats, but Alex is crazy.

Dan lies, but Alex stalks.

Dan makes the first mistake, but Alex becomes the monster.

By the end, the film has transformed a story about a married man making a selfish sexual decision into a horror story about the consequences of being tempted by the wrong woman.

And that message has not aged particularly well.

The Conservative Horror Movie Hiding Inside the Thriller

The more I watch Fatal Attraction, the more it resembles a horror movie built around conservative sexual values.

Don’t stray.

Don’t cheat.

Don’t leave the safety of your marriage.

Don’t become involved with someone outside your social and moral boundaries.

Because if you do, something terrible will come after you.

The problem isn’t the warning.

The problem is who gets blamed.

Dan is a grown man. He makes a choice.

Alex doesn’t force him to have sex with her.

She doesn’t manipulate him into making the initial decision.

She doesn’t climb through his bedroom window and drag him into bed.

He cheats because he chooses to cheat.

Yet the movie’s construction allows Dan’s responsibility to gradually disappear beneath Alex’s increasingly monstrous behavior.

By the end, the audience is meant to be terrified of Alex.

And we are.

But we’re also encouraged to forget why Alex is there in the first place.

Dan invited her into his life.

There Isn’t Much Underneath the Surface

Maybe there are deeper interpretations of Fatal Attraction.

I’m sure there are.

You could read Dan and Alex as embodiments of competing 1980s attitudes toward sex and relationships. You could examine the film as a reflection of changing gender politics. You could discuss the anxieties surrounding the sexual revolution, marriage, career-driven yuppie culture and the growing independence of women.

And people have.

The movie generated considerable discussion about relationships, gender and sexual politics when it was released. Contemporary coverage even described it variously as anti-feminist, a “yuppie slasher,” an advertisement for fidelity and much more. (⁠Los Angeles Times)

But here’s my problem:

I don’t think the movie itself is nearly as deep as the discussion surrounding it.

Fatal Attraction feels like a movie that accidentally generated a much larger conversation than the film itself was capable of sustaining.

There are ideas in there.

There are questions.

But the movie doesn’t really engage with them.

It exploits them.

And that’s an important distinction.

The Movie That Invented Its Own Legacy

Perhaps that’s why the film has lasted.

Not because it’s particularly good.

Not because its characters are particularly compelling.

Not because Adrian Lyne has uncovered some profound truth about human sexuality.

Maybe Fatal Attraction simply arrived at exactly the right cultural moment with exactly the right stars and exactly the right marketing.

It took a familiar story and packaged it as something more significant.

The film’s own publicity helped establish the narrative before audiences even walked into the theater.

Dan was the happily married man.

Alex was the seductress.

Dan made a mistake.

Alex became obsessed.

The message was already waiting for the audience.

And audiences bought it.

The movie opened in only 758 theaters on September 18, 1987, before expanding rapidly as word of mouth grew. It ultimately spent eight consecutive weeks at number one. (⁠AFI Catalog)

That’s an extraordinary run for any movie.

But commercial success doesn’t automatically make a movie profound.

Sometimes a movie simply hits a cultural nerve.

Fatal Attraction Has Aged Like Milk

There is something almost fascinating about watching Fatal Attraction now.

The movie still works as a thriller.

The mechanics are effective enough. Glenn Close is unforgettable. Michael Douglas is perfectly suited to the role of the smug, successful man who discovers that his carefully controlled life has suddenly spun out of control.

And Adrian Lyne knows how to make sex look dangerous.

But strip away the reputation and what remains?

A garish, over-the-top thriller with performances that frequently veer into melodrama, a director more interested in sexual imagery than sexual insight, and a screenplay that raises questions it has no real interest in answering.

It is pretentious and silly.

But not in a fun, so-bad-it’s-good way.

It’s empty.

And the ugliness isn’t merely in the movie’s ridiculousness. It’s in the larger narrative that surrounds it.

Fatal Attraction wants us to fear Alex.

Fair enough.

But I find myself increasingly interested in fearing the worldview that made Alex easier to blame than Dan.

The movie’s most enduring idea may not actually be that infidelity has consequences.

It may be that when a man cheats, the real danger isn’t that he has betrayed his wife.

The real danger, according to Fatal Attraction, is that he might accidentally choose a woman who won’t let him get away with it.

Nearly 40 years later, that distinction is impossible to ignore.

Author’s Note: He had spent nearly 20 years falling from buildings, cliffs and mountains to make movie stars look fearless. On the day he died, there was no reckless shortcut, no broken equipment and no obvious mistake. There was only a stuntman, a cliff and one terrible moment when everything went wrong.

He Was Supposed to Be Going Home

On Saturday, August 29, 1981, Jack Tyree was supposed to be celebrating.

It was the weekend of his 20th high school reunion in Vallejo, California, and his childhood friend Merle Neff was scheduled to pick him up at the airport. Former classmates were looking forward to seeing the kid they remembered as “Jack Smiley,” a nickname earned through the upbeat, good-natured personality that had followed him throughout his life.

Instead, Tyree’s friends and family would be gathering for his funeral.

He was 39 years old.

For nearly two decades, Tyree had worked as a Hollywood stuntman, building a reputation for doing one of the most dangerous things imaginable: falling from very, very high places.

He had made a career out of knowing how to fall.

And on August 25, 1981, he fell to his death.

The tragedy is almost too cruel in its symmetry.

But the circumstances surrounding Jack Tyree’s death make the story even more difficult to process because there was no obvious reason for it to happen.

There was no spectacular equipment failure.

No reckless attempt to save money.

No stuntman trying to break a record.

By all available accounts, the stunt had been carefully planned and extensively prepared.

Jack Tyree simply didn’t land where he was supposed to.

And nobody has ever been able to explain exactly why.

A Man Who Was Drawn to Danger

Adventure wasn’t something Jack Tyree discovered in Hollywood.

It had been part of his personality from the beginning.

Friends remembered him as someone with an enormous appetite for life and a willingness to take on challenges that might have made other people hesitate. His fascination with the water eventually led him to join the United States Marine Corps after high school, where he became an expert scuba diver.

Even marriage became an adventure.

When Tyree married his wife, Cynthia, the ceremony took place underwater.

Tyree wore his own custom wetsuit, and among those closest to him was his Hollywood friend Lee Majors, who would serve as Tyree’s best man.

It was an unusual wedding, perfectly suited to a man who didn’t seem particularly interested in doing anything the ordinary way.

After leaving the Marines, Tyree continued working around the water, taking a job at California’s famed Marineland.

Then Hollywood came calling.

In 1968, Tyree got his first stunt job on Planet of the Apes.

It was the beginning of a career that would eventually make him one of the industry’s most trusted stunt performers.

He started with horseback riding stunts and other demanding physical work, but eventually discovered the particular skill that would define his career.

Falling.

Big falls.

The kind of falls that make an audience gasp.

The kind of falls that movie stars generally prefer to let someone else perform.

The Fall

On August 25, 1981, Tyree was working as the stunt double for actor Richard Moll on Albert Pyun’s science-fiction adventure The Sword and the Sorcerer.

The stunt was exactly the kind of work for which Tyree had become known.

He was supposed to be thrown over the edge of a mountain and fall approximately 80 feet onto an inflatable safety mat positioned below.

It wasn’t a new stunt for him.

Only a year earlier, Tyree had performed essentially the same stunt for the television miniseries Masada.

Even more remarkably, the stunt was being performed at the same cliffside location.

Tyree had successfully completed the fall several times during the production of Masada.

He knew the location.

He knew the stunt.

He knew how to fall.

And he had done it before.

That familiarity may be one of the most haunting aspects of what happened next.

Because experience is supposed to make dangerous things safer.

Preparation is supposed to make them safer.

Repetition is supposed to make them safer.

But there is no such thing as a completely safe stunt.

Every stunt performer understands that.

The entire profession is built around managing risk, minimizing danger and then accepting the small piece of danger that can never be eliminated.

On August 25, something went wrong.

Tyree missed the inflatable safety mat and fell to the ground.

He died from his injuries.

He was 39.

There Was No Easy Answer

In the aftermath of a stunt accident, people naturally look for someone to blame.

Sometimes there is an obvious answer.

We recently looked at the accident during the production of The Cannonball Run, when four stunt performers were injured and Heidi Von Beltz suffered injuries that left her permanently paralyzed.

That accident had a deeply troubling explanation. The production’s approach to the stunt vehicle and its preparation raised serious questions about whether cost and scheduling considerations had been placed ahead of performer safety.

There was something tangible to point toward.

Jack Tyree’s death was different.

According to producer Brandon Chase, between six and seven hours had been spent preparing for the stunt that ultimately killed Tyree.

That matters.

This wasn’t a stunt performer being casually thrown into something nobody had properly considered.

It was being prepared.

It was being checked.

And the man performing it was one of the most experienced stuntmen in Hollywood.

He had performed the same basic stunt before.

He knew what he was doing.

And yet, he died.

That is considerably harder to accept.

Theories, But No Answers

There have been theories about what happened.

The most common speculation among stunt performers was that Tyree simply misjudged the jump.

Perhaps something about the timing was different.

Perhaps his trajectory was slightly off.

Perhaps the familiarity of the stunt gave him a level of confidence that caused him to make a tiny adjustment at precisely the wrong moment.

Another theory came from stuntman and friend Conrad Palmisano, who suggested that the cliffside itself may have given way, causing Tyree to lose his footing and mistime the jump.

There was also a lawsuit filed by Tyree’s daughter following his death. The suit reportedly alleged that the crash pad had been positioned too far from the intended landing area.

But none of those explanations provides a definitive answer.

We simply don’t know.

And after 45 years, we never will.

The Other Side of the Fall

That uncertainty is what makes Tyree’s story so different from another tragedy in the stunt community.

Stuntman A.J. Bakunas died attempting to break the record for the highest fall while working on the film Steel.

In Bakunas’ case, there was a terrible but identifiable flaw in the stunt. His crash pad wasn’t designed to absorb the impact of a fall from the height he was attempting.

It was a terrible decision with a terrible outcome.

In a poignant coincidence, Lee Majors, the star of Steel, was the last person known to speak with Bakunas before his fatal stunt.

Majors’ connection to Jack Tyree was much more personal.

He wasn’t simply another actor who had worked with Tyree.

He had been there when Tyree married Cynthia underwater.

He had been his friend.

And in the years following Tyree’s death, Majors would become one of the most recognizable television advocates for the men and women who performed Hollywood’s most dangerous work.

The Fall Guy

When The Fall Guy premiered in 1981, Lee Majors played Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who moonlighted as a bounty hunter.

The series turned the stuntman’s profession into the centerpiece of an action show.

Majors performed many of his own stunts, a gesture that reflected his long-standing respect for the people who actually performed the dangerous work behind Hollywood’s biggest stars.

There is something particularly poignant about that connection.

Jack Tyree died in August 1981.

The Fall Guy premiered just months later.

The television series would become a celebration of the stuntman: the person who ran toward the explosion, drove the car off the cliff, crashed through the window and took the fall so the audience could experience the thrill without ever seeing the danger.

But there is an uncomfortable truth buried beneath all that excitement.

Those falls are real.

The explosions are real.

The cars really crash.

And sometimes the person underneath the costume doesn’t get up.

Knowing How to Fall

The most tragic thing about Jack Tyree’s death may be that he wasn’t inexperienced.

He wasn’t an outsider who wandered into a dangerous stunt without understanding the risks.

He was a professional.

He had spent nearly 20 years learning how to do this.

He had performed the stunt before.

He had performed it at the same location.

Hours had been spent preparing for it.

Everything that was supposed to make the stunt safer was there.

And then, for reasons that remain unknown, Jack Tyree missed the airbag.

That is the part of his story that stays with you.

There is a temptation when discussing stunt deaths to search for a villain. Someone must have cut a corner. Someone must have ignored a warning. Someone must have made a reckless decision.

Sometimes that’s true.

But Jack Tyree’s death reminds us of something more frightening.

Sometimes everyone can do everything they know to do, and something can still go terribly wrong.

The margin between a spectacular movie stunt and a fatal accident can be measured in inches.

Maybe that’s what makes stunt performers so remarkable.

They aren’t fearless.

They know exactly what can happen.

They simply learn how to live with the fear long enough to do the job.

A Tribute to Jack Tyree

Jack Tyree never made it to his high school reunion.

The classmates waiting to see “Jack Smiley” never got their chance to sit down with the old friend they remembered.

Instead, they attended his funeral.

A man who had spent his life chasing adventure, who had served his country, explored the ocean, married underwater and built a career falling from impossible heights was gone.

The final irony is unavoidable.

Jack Tyree became famous for knowing how to fall.

It was a fall that killed him.

But perhaps his story shouldn’t ultimately be remembered for the fall.

It should be remembered for the life that came before it.

For the Marine who became a scuba diver.

For the adventurer who married underwater.

For the friend remembered for his smile.

For the stuntman who spent nearly two decades doing the dangerous things audiences would later remember as entertainment.

And for every stunt performer who has ever stood on the edge of a building, a mountain or a cliff, knowing that thousands of people will someday watch the few seconds that follow and think only about how thrilling it was.

They rarely think about the person who actually took the fall.

The end credits of The Sword and the Sorcerer carried a simple dedication:

“This Film is Dedicated to Jack Tyree, Stuntman.”

It is a fitting epitaph.

Because Jack Tyree wasn’t just the man who fell.

He was the man who spent his life learning how to fall so the rest of us could experience the thrill of watching it.

And sometimes, even when the preparation is perfect, the experience is real, and the person taking the risk is the best in the business, the fall doesn’t end where it is supposed to.

Fred Walton walked away from horror to make a small, personal wrestling drama. Then it took nearly two years to find an audience—and by the time it did, its young star was making headlines for everything except the movie.

A very different movie for Fred Walton

There is a strange kind of movie that seems destined to be forgotten.

It isn’t necessarily a bad movie. It doesn’t have to be a spectacular bomb. Sometimes it is simply a movie that never gets the chance to become anything.

Hadley’s Rebellion is one of those movies.

Released in 1983, Fred Walton’s small coming-of-age drama arrived with a cast that, at least on paper, seemed to give it every reason to be noticed. Griffin O’Neal, the son of Ryan O’Neal, played the lead. William Devane and Charles Durning provided veteran star power. Chad McQueen, son of Steve McQueen, had a supporting role, while Adam Baldwin was also in the cast.

But the most interesting thing about Hadley’s Rebellion isn’t the names attached to it.

It is how hard everybody worked to get the movie made—and how little happened once they finally did.

Walton had already directed When a Stranger Calls in 1979, the horror film that established him as a filmmaker worth watching. Instead of immediately following that success with another thriller, Walton turned toward something much smaller and much more personal: a drama about an alienated teenager who discovers himself through amateur wrestling.

The movie was written by Walton and Steve Feke, the same Feke with whom Walton had developed When a Stranger Calls. The two had met at Denison University, and Walton later recalled their friendship and their work together in interviews about April Fool’s Day. (⁠Blu-ray.com)

The story couldn’t have been much farther from the horror movie that had put Walton on the map.

Hadley Hickman doesn’t fit in

Griffin O’Neal plays Hadley Hickman, a teenager who comes to California from rural Georgia and finds himself an outsider at a prep school.

Hadley doesn’t fit in. He’s not particularly interested in the social hierarchy around him, and the other students don’t exactly rush to welcome him.

Then he finds wrestling.

What begins as an activity becomes a way for Hadley to establish an identity. He becomes good at it, and his talent gradually changes the way the people around him see him.

William Devane plays Coach Ball, a troubled coach whose own life has gone off the rails. Charles Durning plays Sam Crawford, a former wrestler who becomes another important influence on the boy.

The movie is essentially about damaged people finding a way to help each other.

That’s part of what makes Walton’s decision to make it so interesting.

He had already shown Hollywood that he could make people afraid.

Now he wanted to make them care.

The cast looked better than the movie’s prospects

If you were trying to sell Hadley’s Rebellion in 1982, you could at least point to the cast.

O’Neal was only in his late teens and was the son of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. His previous major film had been The Escape Artist, released in 1982. He wasn’t established yet, but he had exactly the kind of family name that could make Hollywood believe a young actor was about to become important. (⁠IMDb)

Then there was Chad McQueen.

Steve McQueen had died in 1980, and his son was beginning to make his own way into acting. McQueen’s role in Hadley’s Rebellion was considerably smaller than O’Neal’s, something a contemporary newspaper article made clear when it announced a promotional screening and described McQueen as having “a smaller role” in the film.

And then there were Devane and Durning.

These weren’t unknown character actors being asked to carry a cheap exploitation movie. Both had substantial film and television résumés. Durning had already become one of the most recognizable character actors of his generation, while Devane had built an impressive career in both movies and television. (⁠TV Insider)

On paper, Hadley’s Rebellion had a lot going for it.

The problem was getting anyone to see it.

William Devane was working for almost nothing

Devane’s story during this period is almost a movie in itself.

His career had taken a hit after Honky Tonk Freeway, the notoriously expensive 1981 comedy that became one of the era’s spectacular box-office failures. By the time he made Hadley’s Rebellion, he was taking whatever work he could find.

A contemporary profile of Devane put it bluntly: he had worked for “next to nothing” on Testament, followed by Hadley’s Rebellion, and even made a documentary for essentially nothing.

The important part, though, is what came next.

Devane wasn’t finished.

He had already been given some of the best advice an actor can receive. As the profile recalled, George C. Scott had told him, “Actors have to act,” essentially take whatever you can get and get back to work.

Devane took the advice.

He kept working.

And then Knots Landing came along.

The producers reportedly signed Devane at a bargain price, hoping to bring some new muscle to the nighttime soap. Instead, the series gave him the kind of television foothold that would define much of his career. (⁠RICHES)

In retrospect, Hadley’s Rebellion was one of the jobs Devane took while trying to keep his career alive.

It just wasn’t the job that saved it.

The movie was finished. Then nothing happened.

This is where the story of Hadley’s Rebellion gets particularly strange.

The movie was made.

There was nothing inherently unusual about that. Independent movies were being made all over Hollywood.

But making an independent movie and getting an independent movie into theaters were two very different things.

Hadley’s Rebellion didn’t receive a normal wide theatrical rollout. Its documented U.S. theatrical release began on September 30, 1983, through ADI Marketing, and the film was handled as a limited-release property rather than a major studio release. (⁠Letterboxd)

By then, the movie had already been sitting around long enough for its moment to begin slipping away.

And then something happened that made an already difficult promotional situation even stranger.

Griffin O’Neal disappeared from the campaign.

When the movie’s young star wasn’t there

A contemporary newspaper column captured the moment.

O’Neal had been scheduled to attend a benefit premiere of Hadley’s Rebellion at the Basilone Theater on Treasure Island. The event was being held to benefit the Alameda/Contra Costa chapter of the American Diabetes Association.

But O’Neal wasn’t going to be there.

According to Joan Finnie, who was in charge of the fundraiser, O’Neal was in Hawaii in a drug detoxification program. Finnie said she knew because she had read about it in People magazine.

The same article noted that Chad McQueen was still expected to attend the screening. Charles Durning was expected to be there as well.

Think about how strange that must have been for the filmmakers.

This was supposed to be a chance to put the young star of their movie in front of an audience.

Instead, the young star was thousands of miles away in treatment.

And the movie’s publicity suddenly had another story attached to it.

This isn’t speculation. The contemporary report exists. O’Neal’s absence from that particular promotional appearance was directly attributed to his treatment.

What we cannot know is how much it affected the movie.

That distinction matters.

There is no evidence that Griffin O’Neal’s absence single-handedly killed Hadley’s Rebellion. The movie was already an obscure independent production facing the much larger problem of distribution.

But for a film that needed every bit of attention it could get, the timing certainly couldn’t have helped.

The children of Hollywood were carrying their own baggage

The O’Neal name was supposed to be an asset.

Ryan O’Neal was a major star. His son had the looks, the family name and a couple of movie roles behind him.

But Griffin’s life was considerably more complicated than a Hollywood publicity campaign could accommodate.

A contemporary feature about the children of famous actors placed O’Neal’s struggles alongside those of other celebrity offspring. The article dealt openly with drug use, difficult relationships with famous parents and the enormous burden of growing up with a recognizable Hollywood name.

That makes the Hadley’s Rebellion newspaper clipping feel even more revealing.

The movie was trying to sell Griffin O’Neal as the next young star.

The newspapers were already becoming interested in Griffin O’Neal the celebrity son.

Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.

And for a movie this small, there wasn’t much room between them.

Hollywood didn’t exactly reject Hadley’s Rebellion

This is where I’ve come to think the movie’s story is more interesting than calling it a flop.

Hadley’s Rebellion wasn’t some giant theatrical disaster.

It never got the opportunity.

Its theatrical life was so limited that there isn’t a meaningful box-office number that tells the story. What we have instead is evidence of a movie being passed around the distribution system, looking for somewhere to land.

By the middle of the decade, Hadley’s Rebellion was being marketed to television buyers. A 1985 television-industry almanac listed it as an ADI Marketing release, alongside other films being prepared for television distribution. (⁠World Radio History)

In other words, the movie’s journey was essentially:

Make the movie.

Find a distributor.

Get it into a handful of theaters.

Move on to television.

There was never a moment when Hadley’s Rebellion became a cultural event.

It simply passed through the system.

And then Fred Walton went back to horror

The irony is that Hadley’s Rebellion didn’t destroy Fred Walton’s career.

It may have simply reminded him how difficult it was to make a small movie without a clearly defined commercial audience.

Walton wouldn’t direct another theatrical feature until 1986.

And when he returned, he went back to the genre that had established him.

April Fool’s Day reunited Walton with Griffin O’Neal.

That reunion is one of the strangest footnotes in the entire story.

The director and young actor whose previous movie had essentially vanished were suddenly back together on a commercial horror film.

April Fool’s Day wasn’t a blockbuster, but it performed far better commercially than Hadley’s Rebellion, earning roughly $13 million against a reported $5 million budget. It would eventually develop a following of its own on home video. (⁠Cody’s Film and TV Blog)

Walton followed it with The Rosary Murders in 1987 and then spent much of the rest of his career working in television, directing made-for-TV movies and episodes of various series. (⁠Wikipedia)

The horror filmmaker had found his way back to the kind of movie Hollywood knew how to sell.

Everybody moved on. The movie didn’t.

That’s what makes Hadley’s Rebellion worth remembering.

There are forgotten movies because they were disasters.

There are forgotten movies because critics hated them.

There are forgotten movies because they were too strange for their time.

And then there are movies like Hadley’s Rebellion.

A filmmaker coming off a hit wanted to make something different.

A young actor with a famous last name was trying to establish himself.

A second Hollywood legacy kid was beginning his own career.

A veteran actor was taking whatever work he could get while trying to stay afloat.

A respected character actor was lending his credibility to a small picture.

The movie was made.

The performances were recorded.

The wrestling matches were filmed.

The credits rolled.

And then the movie spent years trying to find an audience.

Today, Hadley’s Rebellion survives mostly as a strange collection of names attached to a title most people have never heard of: Fred Walton, Griffin O’Neal, William Devane, Charles Durning, Chad McQueen and Adam Baldwin.

That is almost enough to make you wonder how it disappeared in the first place.

But maybe that’s exactly the lesson.

Hollywood doesn’t always forget movies because they failed.

Sometimes it forgets them because nobody ever gave them enough of a chance to succeed.

Hadley’s Rebellion may be one of the purest examples of that kind of forgotten movie.

The Babysitter Who Wasn’t Supposed to Have an Adventure

There was something almost inevitable about the way 1980s movies treated suburbia.

It was supposed to be safe.

It was supposed to be comfortable.

And, more importantly, it was supposed to be boring.

That made it the perfect launching point for an adventure.

Take a bunch of kids who have never really experienced the outside world, drop them into a city they don’t understand, throw a few criminals, car thieves, weird adults and assorted disasters at them, and see what happens.

That was the basic formula behind countless movies of the decade. But few of them executed it with the sheer good-natured energy of Adventures in Babysitting.

Released in 1987, Chris Columbus’ directorial debut is one of those movies that can seem almost impossibly slight when you describe the plot.

Elizabeth Shue plays Chris Parker, a teenager whose boyfriend cancels their anniversary date. She agrees to babysit for the Anderson family instead, looking after young Sara and Brad while trying to survive what should be a relatively uneventful evening.

Of course, it isn’t.

Nothing in an 80s movie happens the way it is supposed to.

When Chris’ friend Brenda calls from downtown Chicago asking for help, Chris reluctantly agrees to go get her. The problem is that she can’t exactly leave the children home alone.

So Chris, Sara and Brad pile into the family car.

Brad’s friend Daryl joins them.

And suddenly a routine night of babysitting becomes an expedition into Chicago.

It isn’t long before the car breaks down, the group encounters a succession of increasingly bizarre adults, and the children find themselves in situations that would probably have sent a modern-day suburban parent into cardiac arrest.

The movie has barely gotten started and already the babysitter has lost control of the evening.

That’s when Adventures in Babysitting becomes fun.

Welcome to the City

What makes the movie work is that Columbus understands the difference between danger and the idea of danger.

To these kids, downtown Chicago might as well be another planet.

They come from comfortable suburban homes. They know their neighborhoods. They know the rules. They know which adults are safe and which adults aren’t.

Then they leave that world.

Suddenly nothing makes sense.

They encounter a tow-truck driver who is less helpful than expected, a car thief who turns out to be considerably more complicated than he first appears, criminals, strangers and adults who seem to operate according to an entirely different set of rules.

And yet the city never becomes the monster the kids expect it to be.

Instead, it becomes a place filled with people.

Some are dangerous. Some are ridiculous. Some are selfish. Some are kind.

That distinction is important because so many movies of this type would have simply turned the city into a cartoon of urban menace.

Columbus doesn’t quite do that.

Chicago is chaotic, but it is also alive.

And the further these suburban kids get from home, the more they begin to realize that the world isn’t divided as neatly as they thought.

Chris Columbus’ First Movie

It is also fascinating to watch Adventures in Babysitting knowing that this was Chris Columbus’ first film as a director.

The rough edges are obvious.

So is the ambition.

Columbus would eventually become one of the defining filmmakers of mainstream family entertainment in the 1990s, directing Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire and helping establish the cinematic version of Harry Potter.

But the DNA is already here.

Columbus was interested in ordinary children whose lives suddenly became extraordinary.

He liked the collision between comfortable suburban life and complete chaos.

And he understood that the funniest thing you can do to a child character is take away every bit of control they think they have.

Chris Parker is supposed to be the responsible one.

She’s the babysitter.

She’s the adult in the room.

Except she’s still a teenager herself.

By the end of the night, she has been chased, stranded, threatened, humiliated and pushed into situations she could never have anticipated.

And somehow she keeps going.

That’s what makes Elizabeth Shue’s performance so important.

Chris isn’t a superhero.

She’s just resourceful.

She keeps making the next decision because somebody has to.

Then There Is Thor

The movie’s most memorable moments aren’t necessarily the biggest ones.

One of the best involves Sara, the youngest child, and her obsession with Thor.

Sara has constructed this fantasy around the comic-book hero. To her, Thor isn’t simply a character. He’s real enough that when she encounters a muscular mechanic played by Vincent D’Onofrio, she becomes convinced that he is Thor living under a secret identity.

The mechanic isn’t particularly interested in playing along.

Sara doesn’t care.

When she sees him behaving in a way that doesn’t fit her idea of her hero, she offers him her cherished Thor helmet, essentially giving him the opportunity to become the person she believes he really is.

It’s a ridiculous little scene.

It’s also incredibly sweet.

And it captures something Columbus understood very early in his career: children’s fantasies aren’t silly simply because adults know they’re fantasies.

To Sara, this matters.

And because it matters to her, it matters to us.

That kind of sincerity was becoming increasingly rare in 1980s teen comedies.

The 80s Had Plenty of Teen Comedies. Not All of Them Had a Heart.

This is where Adventures in Babysitting separates itself from a lot of the movies surrounding it.

There are jokes that haven’t aged particularly well.

Some of the racial humor is uncomfortable. Some of the sexual material feels especially strange when viewed through modern eyes. There are moments where you can practically see the late 1980s peeking through the screen.

Those things shouldn’t be ignored.

But neither should the fact that the movie isn’t fundamentally cynical.

That distinction matters.

A lot of 1980s teen comedies were built around humiliation, sex, cruelty and the idea that everyone was trying to get one over on everyone else.

Adventures in Babysitting certainly has its share of juvenile humor, but underneath it is an almost old-fashioned belief in people.

Chris takes care of the kids.

The kids take care of one another.

Strangers occasionally help.

And even the characters who initially seem threatening aren’t always what they appear to be.

The movie keeps reminding us that the world is more complicated than the children believe.

That’s a surprisingly optimistic message.

The Night Everything Went Wrong

The famous blues-club sequence might be the best example of what the movie does so well.

These kids are completely out of their element, and suddenly they find themselves onstage in front of a room full of adults, surrounded by musicians and people who have absolutely no idea what their suburban babysitter has been through.

Then Albert Collins appears.

The sequence is absurd.

It is completely ridiculous.

And it is exactly the kind of thing that makes Adventures in Babysitting feel like an 80s movie.

Nobody would design a movie like this today.

A babysitter loses a tire, gets dragged into the city, encounters criminals, winds up in a blues club and somehow ends up participating in a musical number.

It shouldn’t work.

But it does.

Because Columbus never asks us to take any of it too seriously.

Maybe the Movie Doesn’t Hold Up. Maybe That’s Not the Point.

Rewatching Adventures in Babysitting as an adult is a strange experience.

There are things you remember that aren’t actually as good as you remembered them.

There are jokes that land differently.

There are scenes that feel much more dated than they did when you were a kid.

And then there are the things you had forgotten.

The sense of adventure.

The feeling that Chicago is this enormous, mysterious place waiting just beyond the boundaries of your neighborhood.

The idea that one ordinary night could turn into the greatest story you would ever tell.

That may be the real reason the movie has survived.

Adventures in Babysitting isn’t profound.

It isn’t particularly sophisticated.

It doesn’t have a grand statement about American society or adolescence.

It is a movie about a babysitter trying to get a group of kids home before their parents return.

And yet, somewhere along the way, it becomes a movie about growing up.

Chris starts the night believing that being responsible means knowing what to do.

She ends it having learned something more important:

Sometimes being responsible means admitting that you have no idea what you’re doing and doing your best anyway.

That’s a pretty good lesson for a movie about a babysitter.

The Kind of 80s Movie We Don’t Make Anymore

There is a temptation when revisiting movies from the 1980s to either defend everything about them because of nostalgia or condemn everything that hasn’t aged well.

Adventures in Babysitting deserves neither treatment.

Some of it has aged badly.

Some of it is gloriously ridiculous.

Some of it is genuinely funny.

And some of it is unexpectedly sweet.

What remains most striking is how much heart the movie has.

Chris Columbus would go on to make much bigger movies. But there is something charming about seeing the filmmaker before the blockbuster machinery took over, working with a relatively simple premise and a young cast and letting the story become increasingly insane.

The result is messy, occasionally dated and completely improbable.

It is also warm, funny and genuinely entertaining.

Maybe that’s why Adventures in Babysitting still works.

The movie isn’t asking us to believe that this could really happen.

It’s asking us to remember what it felt like to believe that it could.

And for anyone who grew up in the 1980s, sometimes that’s enough.

A Detective Story Hiding Inside a Cartoon

Detective Eddie Valiant stands framed by a tunnel, staring toward a physical and emotional destination.

On the other side is the place where he needs to go to save his new friend, Roger Rabbit. But it is also the place where, years earlier, his brother and partner was killed. The conflict weighs heavily on him as he considers what waits for him on the other side, his past and present colliding in a whirlwind of emotion.

I could be describing a 1940s detective movie directed by John Huston or Jules Dassin, with a story by Dashiell Hammett and starring Gene Tierney or Robert Mitchum.

Instead, I am describing Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the iconic live-action/animated feature directed by Robert Zemeckis.

And that is the great joke of the movie.

The comedy comes not simply from putting cartoon characters into the real world, but from the remarkable collision of animated storytelling with Zemeckis’ obvious love of classic detective movies. Who Framed Roger Rabbit understands noir so completely that it can reproduce the genre’s conventions almost perfectly while simultaneously turning them into comedy.

The scene I described above gets a big laugh from me every time, but only after I realize what I am actually watching: a hard-boiled detective confronting the same cartoon thug who killed his brother, now preparing to rescue a cartoon rabbit from him.

It is the collision of past and present, style and substance, drama and comedy that makes it so funny.

How remarkably clever it is to draw a laugh from something that is being played completely straight.

That is the complex genius of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

The Perfect Marriage of Noir and Animation

Released on June 22, 1988, Who Framed Roger Rabbit follows Roger Rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer), a cartoon star who is struggling through a particularly difficult gag in his latest short.

His boss, R. K. Maroon (Alan Tilvern), believes Roger is distracted by his wife, Jessica Rabbit (voiced by Kathleen Turner). Maroon suspects Jessica is cheating on Roger with another man and hires private investigator Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) to follow her.

Eddie discovers Jessica playing patty-cake with Marvin Acme (Stubby Kaye), the wealthy owner of Acme Corporation and proprietor of Toontown.

The photographs are devastating to Roger.

When Eddie delivers them, the rabbit is so distraught that he literally explodes through a window, leaving behind a perfect cartoon outline of himself.

The following day, Acme is found dead in his warehouse.

Roger is the prime suspect.

And suddenly Eddie Valiant, a bitter, alcoholic private detective who wants nothing to do with Toons, finds himself responsible for saving the life of one.

On the surface, it is a brilliantly constructed animated comedy. Underneath, it is a classic noir story about an innocent man being hunted by a corrupt system and a reluctant detective who has to decide whether he is willing to put himself in danger to save him.

That combination is what makes the movie so special.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit doesn’t simply borrow elements from 1940s detective movies. It understands how those movies work.

The shadowy streets. The crooked businessmen. The beautiful woman who may or may not be telling the truth. The cynical detective. The murdered millionaire. The corrupt authority figures. The mysterious conspiracy.

Zemeckis takes all of those familiar ingredients and drops them into a world populated by Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and a wisecracking rabbit named Roger.

The fact that it works at all is astonishing.

The fact that it works this well is almost unbelievable.

A Movie Made With an Obsessive Eye for Detail

The remarkable thing about Who Framed Roger Rabbit is that it never feels like a gimmick.

That could have been the easiest thing in the world for the filmmakers to do. Put cartoons next to human actors, get a few laughs from the novelty and call it a day.

Instead, Zemeckis and his collaborators built an entire world around the idea.

The production design is extraordinary. The costumes feel like they belong to an entirely different era of Hollywood. The cinematography creates the atmosphere of a classic noir. The screenplay understands the rhythm and structure of the detective movies it is emulating.

And the animation doesn’t simply sit on top of the live-action photography.

It exists inside it.

One of my favorite examples comes when Roger tries to sit in the dusty chair belonging to Eddie’s late brother. As Roger pulls the chair back, his fingerprints appear in the dust.

Is that detail necessary?

Probably not.

But that is precisely why it is so impressive.

It tells us how seriously Zemeckis and his team took the central conceit of the movie. Roger isn’t simply an animated character pasted into a live-action movie. He has weight. He interacts with the environment. He leaves evidence of his existence behind.

Every little detail helps convince us that this impossible world is real.

And then there is the seamless interaction between Eddie and Roger.

That remains breathtaking.

Bob Hoskins Becomes a Cartoon Character’s Straight Man

Bob Hoskins deserved an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Eddie Valiant.

There is a wonderful quality to Hoskins that makes him seem as though he could have walked directly out of a 1940s detective movie.

He is rumpled, cynical, exhausted and perpetually irritated. He looks like a man who has spent years sleeping badly, drinking too much and expecting the worst from everyone he meets.

And yet Hoskins never plays the comedy as though he is winking at the audience.

That is essential.

Eddie genuinely believes the world is full of terrible people. He genuinely hates Toons. He genuinely wants Roger to stop talking.

The comedy comes from the fact that Roger is, in fact, a cartoon rabbit who simply will not stop talking.

Hoskins commits completely to the reality of the situation, and that commitment allows the absurdity around him to become even funnier.

There is a scene where Eddie is forced to hide from the police while Roger is desperately trying to keep quiet. The humor works because Hoskins plays Eddie’s frustration with the same intensity another actor might bring to a genuine life-or-death situation.

He understands something fundamental about comedy:

The funniest person in the room doesn’t always know they’re in a comedy.

Jessica Rabbit

And then there is Jessica Rabbit.

Kathleen Turner’s voice performance is one of the movie’s great achievements.

Jessica was designed as a parody of the glamorous, impossibly seductive women who populated film noir and classic Hollywood melodramas. Turner’s deep, breathy delivery evokes the sensuality of actresses like Lauren Bacall, while Jessica’s exaggerated physical appearance draws from the bombshells and pinups of the era.

The joke, of course, is that Jessica Rabbit is a cartoon.

But she is also an incredibly effective character.

She could have been nothing more than a visual gag, yet Jessica has personality, intelligence and a genuine sense of devotion to Roger.

Her famous explanation that she isn’t bad, she’s simply drawn that way, perfectly captures the movie’s understanding of its own absurdity.

And yes, Jessica Rabbit undoubtedly confused a generation of young boys who suddenly discovered that it was possible to be attracted to a cartoon.

That may be one of the strangest cultural accomplishments of the 1980s.

The Effects Still Astonish

Watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit today, one of the things that strikes me most is how much of the film still works.

This is not nostalgia doing all the heavy lifting.

The effects remain extraordinary.

There is something almost magical about watching Roger interact with Eddie, particularly when you remember that Bob Hoskins had to spend much of the production acting opposite characters who weren’t physically there.

The animators had to create the illusion that Roger was actually occupying the same physical space as the actors. Objects had to move convincingly. Lighting had to match. Shadows had to make sense. Characters had to react to one another.

The result is so convincing that it is easy to forget how difficult it must have been.

That may be the highest compliment you can give special effects.

You stop noticing them

.A Masterpiece That Shouldn’t Work

There are plenty of technically impressive movies.

There are plenty of funny movies.

There are plenty of great detective movies.

There are plenty of wonderful animated movies.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is somehow all of them at once.

It is a loving tribute to classic Hollywood, a brilliant piece of animation, a remarkably constructed detective story and one of the funniest movies of its era.

What makes it even more impressive is the confidence with which Zemeckis moves between those identities.

The movie can be genuinely suspenseful one moment and completely ridiculous the next. It can parody a familiar noir convention while simultaneously honoring the very movies that created it.

And somehow, none of it feels forced.

That is the real masterpiece hiding underneath all the technical achievement.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit understands movies.

It understands how they look, how they sound, how they move and, most importantly, how they make us feel.

One of the Greats

I absolutely adore Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

As a kid, it was one of my favorite movies. That childhood attachment is obviously part of my relationship with the film, and I would never pretend otherwise.

But after more than 20 years as a critic, having watched thousands of movies from virtually every era and every genre, I have come to a conclusion that has very little to do with nostalgia:

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

It belongs in the same conversation for me as the great dramas, masterpieces of genre filmmaking and ambitious works of cinema that are routinely held up as serious achievements.

Because it is a serious achievement.

The huge laughs are only the beginning.

The attention to detail is astonishing. The animation remains spectacular. The performances are terrific. The production design is immaculate. The screenplay is clever without ever becoming smug. The noir influences are loving rather than derivative.

Most importantly, the movie has something that can’t be manufactured with technology or money.

It has a soul.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of those rare movies where every element seems to have been created by people who genuinely loved what they were making.

It is funny because it is clever.

It is beautiful because it is meticulously crafted.

It is timeless because underneath all of the animation, special effects and Hollywood magic, it is simply a great story about friendship, loss, redemption and finding the courage to confront the past.

That is why Who Framed Roger Rabbit isn’t merely a beloved childhood favorite.

It is a genuine masterpiece.

And more than three decades later, I still can’t think of many movies that have ever managed to be this much fun while being this damn good.

Rebecca Schaeffer was hours away from auditioning for

The Godfather Part III when a stalker came to her door for the second time.

On the morning of July 18, 1989, Rebecca Schaeffer was supposed to be thinking about her future.

She was 21 years old and, after years of working her way up through modeling, daytime television and a successful sitcom, she was finally beginning to look like the kind of actress Hollywood could build a career around.

That afternoon, she was scheduled to audition for Francis Ford Coppola for the role of Mary Corleone, the daughter of Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone, in The Godfather Part III.

She had not been offered the part. History has a way of making these things sound more certain than they were.

She was auditioning.

But she was considered a strong candidate, Coppola had seen her work, and the possibility represented another enormous step forward for an actress whose career had already moved remarkably quickly.

A copy of the tightly guarded script was being delivered to her apartment that morning so she could prepare for the audition.

Instead, another visitor came to her door.

His name was Robert John Bardo.

He was 19 years old.

He had traveled from Tucson to Los Angeles carrying a photograph of Schaeffer, correspondence from her and a handgun.

And he had not come to ask for an autograph.

Rebecca Schaeffer Was Going Somewhere

Rebecca Schaeffer was born in Eugene, Oregon, in 1967.

Like so many young actors who eventually find themselves in Hollywood, she started by trying to get noticed anywhere she could.

In 1984, she moved to New York City to pursue modeling and acting. The work came relatively quickly. She landed modeling assignments and eventually found her way onto Guiding Light.

The following year, she appeared on One Life to Live, giving her the kind of television exposure that could make casting directors start remembering your name.

But her real breakthrough came almost by accident.

Schaeffer had returned from a modeling job in Japan and was essentially broke. She hadn’t yet been paid for the work when she arrived home to discover a note from her agent telling her to get on a plane to Los Angeles.

She couldn’t afford the trip.

Her agent loaned her the money.

It turned out to be a pretty good investment.

Schaeffer auditioned for a new CBS sitcom called My Sister Sam, starring Pam Dawber, who had become a television star on Mork & Mindy.

Schaeffer won the role of Patti Russell.

The pilot was shot over approximately ten days, with Schaeffer staying at Dawber’s Los Angeles home during production.

Then everything happened at once.

My Sister Sam became part of CBS’s 1986-87 lineup, and Schaeffer suddenly found herself on television every week.

For a young actress trying to establish herself, this was exactly what she needed.

It gave her visibility.

It gave her experience.

And, perhaps most importantly, it gave Hollywood a reason to remember her.

The Movies Were Coming

Television wasn’t the only place Schaeffer was making progress.

In 1986, she appeared in Woody Allen’s Radio Days.

The role looked promising on paper. She played a character described as a sexpot communist, part of the colorful ensemble surrounding the film’s story of growing up during the golden age of radio.

But by the time Radio Days reached theaters in 1987, Schaeffer’s role had been reduced to a single scene.

It was another disappointment.

But it was the kind of disappointment an actress could survive when she had a successful sitcom waiting for her.

My Sister Sam wasn’t an enormous phenomenon, but it was successful enough to return for a second season.

And Schaeffer’s profile continued to rise.

She was young.

She was attractive.

She was talented.

And she was beginning to move beyond the world of television sitcoms.

There was no reason to believe she wouldn’t continue doing exactly that.

Then someone watching her on television became obsessed with her.

The Fan

Robert John Bardo was a teenage loner from Tucson, Arizona.

He watched My Sister Sam.

Then he began recording episodes.

He collected photographs and magazine articles about Schaeffer. He wrote her fan letters. He tried to establish some kind of connection with the actress he saw on television.

At least one person close to Bardo eventually became aware of how intense the obsession had become.

Police later learned that a female friend from Tennessee had seen Bardo’s collection of My Sister Sam tapes and one of the letters he had written to Schaeffer.

There was a crucial distinction between what Schaeffer knew and what Bardo believed.

To Schaeffer, he was a fan.

To Bardo, she was becoming something else.

He was building a relationship that existed almost entirely inside his own imagination.

He had never really known Rebecca Schaeffer.

He knew Patti Russell.

He knew photographs.

He knew magazine articles.

He knew the version of Rebecca Schaeffer that television had given him.

And that version of her was beginning to take on a life of its own.

In 1987, Bardo actually traveled to the My Sister Sam studio in Burbank carrying flowers and a large teddy bear and asked to see Schaeffer.

Security turned him away.

That should have been the end of it.

It wasn’t.

The Address

By 1989, Bardo had become increasingly determined to find Schaeffer.

He had tried to reach her before.

Now he needed something he didn’t have.

Her address.

In June, Bardo went to a private investigator in Tucson.

He told the investigator he wanted Schaeffer’s address so he could send her a present.

He paid approximately $250.

The investigator obtained the address through California motor-vehicle records.

It is one of the most disturbing details in the entire story because of how ordinary it sounded at the time.

A person’s home address was not treated with the same sensitivity we might expect today.

There were systems in place that could make private information surprisingly easy to obtain.

Bardo now knew where Rebecca Schaeffer lived.

And that changed everything.

He had also tried to purchase a handgun himself but was unable to do so. Eventually, his older brother bought a .357 Magnum for him, apparently believing Bardo wanted it for target shooting.

By July, Bardo had the address.

He had the gun.

And he had decided to go to Los Angeles.

July 17

On the evening of July 17, Bardo boarded a Greyhound bus in Tucson.

It was approximately 7 p.m.

He was carrying the gun, a photograph of Schaeffer and correspondence connected to the actress.

He also carried a copy of The Catcher in the Rye.

That detail would become significant later.

Bardo had become fascinated by the story of Mark David Chapman, the man who murdered John Lennon. During his eventual psychiatric evaluation, it became clear that Bardo had been interested in other celebrity stalkers and killers.

He wasn’t simply traveling to Los Angeles to see a celebrity.

He was traveling toward an obsession that had been building for years.

The bus arrived in Los Angeles at approximately 5 the next morning.

Bardo couldn’t afford a taxi.

He took public transportation toward Schaeffer’s neighborhood.

By around 6 a.m., he was there.

He had hours to kill.

And he knew exactly what he was looking for.

The First Visit

Bardo spent time walking around the neighborhood.

He showed people Schaeffer’s photograph.

He asked questions.

Eventually, he located her apartment building.

The building’s intercom was not functioning properly, meaning there was no simple way for Schaeffer to identify someone downstairs and decide whether to let them in.

Bardo got to her door.

And Rebecca Schaeffer answered.

This is where the story becomes almost impossible to process.

Because this wasn’t a stranger suddenly appearing with a gun.

It was a fan.

At least that’s what Schaeffer believed she was dealing with.

Bardo identified himself as someone who admired her work. He had a photograph or card connected to correspondence she had previously sent him.

She spoke with him.

Then she sent him away.

She had things to do.

Most importantly, she was preparing for the afternoon audition that could have changed her career.

Francis Ford Coppola was waiting.

The Godfather Part III was waiting.

Her future was waiting.

Bardo left.

He went to a nearby diner for breakfast.

And then he came back.

The Second Visit

The second time Bardo approached Schaeffer’s apartment, he was carrying the gun.

It was approximately 10:15 in the morning.

Schaeffer answered the door again.

She had no reason to believe the person standing there had transformed from an irritating fan into a murderer.

According to later accounts, Schaeffer told Bardo that he was wasting her time.

Whatever precisely was said, something happened in Bardo’s mind.

The fantasy he had constructed around her collided with the reality of the woman standing in front of him.

Rebecca Schaeffer wasn’t Patti Russell.

She wasn’t the woman he had invented from television appearances and photographs.

She was a real person.

She had an audition to prepare for.

She had a life that did not revolve around him.

Bardo pulled out the .357 Magnum and shot her in the chest.

Then he ran.

Rebecca Schaeffer was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

She died shortly afterward.

She was 21 years old.

The afternoon audition never happened.

The Future That Never Happened

There is a temptation, when discussing the death of a young actor, to construct the career that might have been.

We know what Schaeffer was scheduled to audition for.

We know she had already attracted attention.

We know she had television experience.

We know she had worked with Woody Allen.

And we know she was standing at the beginning of what could have become a significant movie career.

But we don’t know that she would have gotten the role in The Godfather Part III.

She might have.

She might not have.

That’s what makes the story so painful.

She was still auditioning.

The future had not yet been written.

And then it was taken away.

The Godfather Part III eventually went to Sofia Coppola, who played Mary Corleone in the finished film.

That casting decision has become part of Hollywood history for entirely different reasons.

But before Sofia Coppola ever stepped into the role, Rebecca Schaeffer was one of the actresses being considered.

On July 18, 1989, she was supposed to spend the afternoon trying to convince Francis Ford Coppola that she was the right person to play the daughter of Michael Corleone.

Instead, she was dead before lunchtime.

The Man Who Thought He Knew Her

Bardo’s later explanations made the story even more disturbing.

He had become particularly upset by Schaeffer’s appearance in Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, which included a brief sexual scene involving her character and Ray Sharkey.

To Bardo, this was a betrayal.

The woman he had created in his mind was not supposed to behave that way.

This is perhaps the most important thing to understand about the murder.

Bardo didn’t know Rebecca Schaeffer.

He knew an image of her.

He knew the character she played on television.

He knew the photographs.

He knew the fantasy.

And when the real woman contradicted that fantasy, he couldn’t accept it.

The problem wasn’t that Schaeffer had changed.

The problem was that she had never been the person Bardo imagined her to be.

She had never belonged to him.

She simply existed.

And she had the audacity to be a person outside the fantasy he had constructed around her.

Hollywood Had a Problem

Rebecca Schaeffer’s murder shocked Hollywood because it exposed something the entertainment industry had spent decades taking for granted.

Fame makes people visible.

Hollywood depends on that visibility.

Actors need people to know their names. They need magazines to publish their photographs. They need television viewers to recognize them. They need fans.

But there is a difference between being seen and being accessible.

And Schaeffer’s murder demonstrated just how dangerous that difference could become.

Bardo had been able to obtain her private address through a system that was never designed with celebrity stalking in mind.

After Schaeffer’s murder, the California Department of Motor Vehicles changed its policies regarding access to personal information.

Her death became one of the events that helped push the issue of celebrity privacy into the national conversation.

It also became an early warning about stalking in the age of mass media.

This was before the internet.

Before social media.

Before smartphones.

Before someone could follow a celebrity’s location in real time.

Bardo had television.

He had magazines.

He had fan mail.

He had a private investigator.

And he had a gun.

That was enough.

The Door

There is something haunting about the timing of Rebecca Schaeffer’s death.

She wasn’t at a Hollywood party.

She wasn’t walking home from a premiere.

She wasn’t driving down Sunset Boulevard.

She was at home.

She was preparing for an audition.

Her career was moving forward.

A script was coming.

A major director wanted to see her.

The next few hours were supposed to be about the possibility of becoming something more than the young actress audiences already knew.

Instead, her final hours became a warning about the darkest side of celebrity.

She had spent years trying to get Hollywood to notice her.

When it finally did, someone else was watching too closely.

Robert Bardo found Rebecca Schaeffer because he wanted access to the woman he believed he knew.

He obtained her address.

He traveled across the country.

He found her.

She sent him away.

He came back.

And when she opened the door a second time, the future she had spent her entire young life building disappeared in an instant.

We can spend all day imagining what Rebecca Schaeffer might have done next.

Maybe she would have played Mary Corleone.

Maybe she would have become a major movie star.

Maybe she would have gone back to television.

Maybe she would have done something none of us could have predicted.

We’ll never know.

Because on the morning of July 18, 1989, Rebecca Schaeffer was still auditioning for the future.

She just never got the chance to see what it looked like.

Columbia Had Two Alien Movies

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Columbia Pictures found itself sitting on one of those Hollywood problems that sounds like a dream until you realize how badly a studio can screw it up.

The studio had two science-fiction projects involving aliens coming to Earth.

One involved an alien who befriends a young boy and eventually needs help getting back home.

The other involved an adult woman who encounters an alien and helps him return to his mother ship.

There were obviously differences between the two stories, but the basic idea was remarkably similar: What happens when an extraterrestrial comes to Earth and an ordinary human decides to help him get home?

The first project was connected to Steven Spielberg.

The second would eventually become Starman.

And somewhere in the middle of this story, Columbia Pictures had a choice to make.

They chose the wrong alien.

The Movie That Looked Too Much Like a Kids’ Movie

The Spielberg project had begun as Night Skies, a darker, stranger science-fiction project conceived as a sort of companion to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. John Sayles worked on the original screenplay, which involved hostile aliens terrorizing a family—but there was also a friendly alien named Buddy who forms a relationship with a child and is ultimately left behind.

That friendly alien became the seed for something very different.

Spielberg developed the idea with Melissa Mathison, who wrote a new screenplay called E.T. and Me. That screenplay eventually became E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Columbia had spent roughly $1 million developing the project, but executives became convinced that it was too much of a children’s movie. One Columbia executive reportedly dismissed it as a “wimpy Walt Disney movie.” (⁠AFI Catalog)

There were other complications involving Spielberg’s contractual obligations to Universal, and the studios eventually worked out a deal that sent the project to Universal while allowing Columbia to retain a percentage of the profits.

That turned out to be a spectacularly bad bargain for Columbia.

E.T. became a phenomenon, eventually surpassing Star Wars as the highest-grossing film in history at the time.

And Columbia still had its other alien movie.

Starman.

The irony was already beginning to write itself.

Hollywood Wanted the Adult Version

Starman had been purchased by Columbia at the urging of producer Michael Douglas, who had enormous credibility in Hollywood after producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The project had been in development for years, and Douglas remained one of its most consistent champions. (⁠AFI Catalog)

The thinking made sense.

If E.T. was the children’s alien movie, Starman could be the adult one.

It could have romance.

It could have sex.

It could have serious themes.

It could have a grown-up protagonist.

It could be science fiction without looking like a children’s picture.

And then E.T. came out.

Suddenly the very thing Columbia had worried about—an alien movie aimed at families—was exactly what audiences wanted.

E.T. didn’t merely succeed. It changed the economics of the blockbuster.

And Starman suddenly had a problem.

It had spent years being developed as the adult alternative to something that had just become one of the biggest movies in history.

So Columbia did what Hollywood often does when a movie doesn’t quite know what it wants to be.

It started changing things.

The Director’s Chair Became a Revolving Door

Starman spent roughly four to five years in development at Columbia, and the list of directors attached to it reads almost like a history of Hollywood filmmakers who had better things to do.

Mark Rydell was involved before leaving the project to make On Golden Pond.

Adrian Lyne spent about a year with the project before departing to make Flashdance.

John Badham came aboard.

Then Tony Scott.

Then Peter Hyams.

Finally, John Carpenter.

By the time Carpenter arrived, Starman had already become less of a movie than a Hollywood group project.

Every director brought a different idea of what the movie should be.

Every new version required another rewrite.

And then there was Dean Riesner.

Riesner, one of Hollywood’s most experienced script doctors, spent years rewriting the screenplay, working with multiple directors and trying to solve the same problem: How do you make an alien movie that audiences won’t immediately compare to E.T.? (⁠Wikipedia)

The answer eventually came from Carpenter.

And it wasn’t to make Starman more like a science-fiction movie.

It was to make it less like one.

John Carpenter Took the Alien Out of the Alien Movie

Carpenter had built his career on movies like Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween and Escape from New York. He was not exactly the first filmmaker you would expect to make a tender science-fiction romance.

But that was precisely what interested him.

Instead of emphasizing the extraterrestrial mythology, Carpenter focused on the relationship between the alien and Jenny Hayden, the Wisconsin widow played by Karen Allen.

The movie became a road movie.

It became a romance.

It became a variation on It Happened One Night with an extraterrestrial replacing the runaway heiress.

And Jeff Bridges’ alien wasn’t designed to be a creature that audiences feared.

He was designed to be someone who didn’t understand humanity.

That was the movie.

The alien was almost beside the point.

For a while, it looked as though Carpenter had finally figured out how to make Starman its own movie.

Then Hollywood got involved again.

And Then They Hired Everybody

Carpenter wanted to make a more intimate film, but that didn’t stop Columbia from surrounding the production with some of the biggest names in special effects.

Joe Alves, who had worked on Jaws and received an Academy Award nomination for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, became a visual consultant.

Then came Rick Baker.

Then Dick Smith.

Then Stan Winston.

If you were putting together a Mount Rushmore of Hollywood makeup and creature effects in the early 1980s, you could make a pretty good argument that those three names would be on it.

Baker had just come off An American Werewolf in London.

Smith had helped redefine screen makeup with The Exorcist.

Winston was becoming one of the industry’s premier creature and animatronic artists.

And then something bizarre happened.

Much of the work they created barely made it into the finished movie.

The three men would eventually express frustration with how their contributions were used.

Dick Smith later complained that having his name alongside Baker and Winston created an expectation that Starman would contain spectacular creature effects that the movie was never really trying to deliver.

Rick Baker was even more blunt about the transformation sequence, explaining that he never considered the scene particularly spectacular in the first place and that Carpenter specifically did not want a “showstopper.”

That was the problem.

The movie’s production suggested one kind of science-fiction spectacle.

Carpenter was making something else.

Even a glowing baby prop created by Smith and Baker suffered from the same problem. The artists had put extraordinary detail into it, only for the lighting to obscure much of that work.

Joe Alves was also unhappy with how some of his visual effects work was altered during post-production.

Industrial Light & Magic ultimately handled the film’s optical effects.

The result was a movie that seemed to be caught between two competing identities.

The people making the effects thought they were making a major effects picture.

Carpenter was trying to make a love story.

And Columbia was trying to make sure nobody called it E.T.

Everyone Thought It Was Another Movie

The comparisons didn’t stop with E.T.

There was another alien movie coming in 1984: John Sayles’ low-budget The Brother from Another Planet.

Sayles’ movie was radically different from Starman, but the basic premise—an alien comes to Earth and tries to navigate human society—was similar enough to make Carpenter nervous.

According to accounts of the production, Carpenter contacted Sayles and asked to see the movie before its release.

Sayles agreed.

He wasn’t particularly worried.

In fact, he seemed to think the existence of Starman might actually help his movie.

That turned out to be a pretty good example of the strange position Starman occupied.

Everybody around it was worried about what other movies might make it look like.

Nobody seemed entirely sure what Starman itself was supposed to be.

And then the screenplay became another battlefield.

The Screenwriter Who Didn’t Get Credit

By the time Starman was ready to shoot, Dean Riesner had written multiple drafts and worked with several directors.

But when the Writers Guild of America arbitrated the screenplay credit, it awarded credit to the original writers, Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans.

Riesner didn’t get screen credit.

Carpenter was furious.

So was Columbia.

Carpenter apparently believed that the movie being shot bore little resemblance to the earliest versions of the screenplay and personally fought for Riesner to receive recognition.

He lost.

So Carpenter did something that nearly created another fight with the Writers Guild.

He put a special thanks to Dean Riesner in the end credits.

The Guild objected to what it regarded as an attempt to circumvent the arbitration ruling and reportedly discussed forcing Columbia to remove the offending credit from prints of the film.

For a movie about an alien trying to find his way home, Starman had spent an astonishing amount of time fighting with almost everybody on Earth.

And Then There Was the Box Office

Starman finally arrived on December 14, 1984.

It had cost approximately $24 million.

Columbia had spent years developing it.

It had cycled through directors.

It had been rewritten repeatedly.

It had survived E.T.

It had survived the effects artists.

It had survived the Writers Guild.

And now it had to survive the box office.

It didn’t exactly.

The movie grossed about $28.7 million domestically. (⁠Box Office Mojo)

That wasn’t a catastrophic theatrical loss, but it was hardly the blockbuster Columbia had hoped for.

And sitting nearby were two other giant science-fiction movies released around the same time: David Lynch’s Dune and Peter Hyams’ 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

Starman wasn’t a phenomenon.

But something funny happened anyway.

People remembered it.

Jeff Bridges was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Karen Allen’s Jenny became one of the more memorable romantic protagonists in Carpenter’s filmography.

And over time, Starman developed the kind of reputation that Hollywood rarely knows what to do with.

It became a movie people liked more than they expected to.

A cult movie.

A John Carpenter movie that didn’t really look or feel like a John Carpenter movie.

An alien movie that wasn’t really about aliens.

And perhaps most importantly, a movie that Columbia had spent years trying to make into something it wasn’t.

The Hollywood Machine Still Wasn’t Finished

Michael Douglas wasn’t ready to let Starman disappear.

In 1986, he helped bring the property to television.

ABC ordered a 22-episode series that continued the story without Carpenter, Jeff Bridges or Karen Allen.

Robert Hays became the new Starman, returning to Earth 15 years after the events of the movie. His mission involved his son, Scott, played by Christopher Daniel Barnes, and the search for his mother, Jenny, with Erin Gray taking over the role.

The series lasted one season.

And eventually, even television gave up on Starman.

The alien finally went home.

Hollywood moved on.

Columbia Had Been Looking for the Wrong Movie

That’s what makes the history of Starman so much more interesting than the simple punchline that Columbia rejected E.T.

Yes, Columbia made one of the great miscalculations in Hollywood history.

It looked at Spielberg’s alien movie and saw something childish.

It looked at Starman and saw something adult.

Then audiences proved that the supposedly childish movie was exactly what they wanted.

But Starman wasn’t a failure because it wasn’t E.T.

In fact, its greatest strength was that it eventually stopped trying to compete with E.T.

Carpenter understood something the studio had spent years missing.

The alien wasn’t the movie.

The effects weren’t the movie.

The spaceship wasn’t the movie.

The science fiction wasn’t even really the movie.

The movie was Jenny.

It was the lonely woman who had lost her husband and suddenly found herself driving across America with a stranger wearing his face.

It was two people who couldn’t communicate trying desperately to understand one another.

It was a road movie disguised as science fiction.

And that may be the strangest part of the entire Hollywood Machine story.

Columbia spent five years trying to find the commercial answer to E.T.

What they eventually got was something much harder to manufacture.

A movie with a heart.

Hollywood had looked at two alien movies and decided the safer bet was the one for adults.

Audiences had already given them the answer.

They just weren’t looking for it.

And somewhere in the middle of all that bad timing, studio panic, revolving-door directors, script battles and discarded special effects, John Carpenter accidentally made the movie Columbia had been trying to find all along.

Not the next E.T.

Just Starman.

The Greatest Contest in MTV History

In 1984, MTV held a contest that sounded less like a promotion and more like something a reckless Hollywood producer might dream up after midnight.

A Van Halen fan and a companion would win the chance to spend a weekend on the road with the band. Not a backstage meet-and-greet. Not a couple of concert tickets. This was supposed to be the real thing: behind-the-scenes access, backstage partying and whatever else came with spending 48 hours inside the Van Halen circus.

The contest was an enormous success.

More than a million entries poured in, and eventually MTV selected 20-year-old Kurt Jefferis of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. His prize included the right to bring one friend.

Jefferis chose his best friend, 19-year-old Tom Winnick.

It turned out to be a very good decision.

The stories about rock bands on the road have always occupied a strange place in American mythology. Trashed hotel rooms. Televisions thrown from windows. Drugs. Alcohol. Groupies. The kind of behavior that gets exaggerated with every retelling until nobody knows where reality ends and the legend begins.

MTV wasn’t interested in separating the two.

It was 1984. Van Halen was enormous. MTV was enormous. And the network had just created one of the greatest pieces of rock-and-roll publicity imaginable.

Then MTV realized something.

It could make a movie out of this.

MTV Wanted to Turn the Weekend Into a Movie

The response to the Lost Weekend promotion was so strong that MTV began exploring a feature-film version.

This wasn’t simply an idea scribbled on a cocktail napkin.

A screenplay was commissioned, and a 112-page script eventually existed. Henry Winkler—the Fonz himself—was attached as one of the producers. Contemporary music-industry coverage described the project as MTV’s first cinematic venture and envisioned a story about a small-town winner getting the same kind of once-in-a-lifetime rock-and-roll trip.

The project was real.

And for a moment, it made perfect sense.

MTV had the audience. It had the rock stars. It had the publicity. It had a built-in story. And, most importantly, it had just demonstrated that millions of people wanted to fantasize about what happened when the doors to Van Halen’s world opened.

The problem was that MTV had one more thing it needed.

Van Halen.

And by 1985, Van Halen was becoming increasingly difficult to keep in the same room.

The Weekend Was Even Wilder Than MTV Expected

Before the movie could happen, though, Kurt Jefferis and Tom Winnick had to survive the real thing.

The pair were flown to Detroit, where Van Halen was playing two nights at Cobo Hall. They received the full VIP treatment: first-class travel, a limousine and access most fans could only dream about.

Then they met David Lee Roth.

According to Jefferis’ recollections, the evening quickly descended into the kind of rock-and-roll insanity MTV had been hoping to capture. Roth drank heavily. There was cocaine. There was partying backstage. There were groupies.

At one point, Jefferis recalled doing cocaine off Roth’s pinkie finger.

Roth reportedly introduced Jefferis to a legendary Van Halen groupie named Tammy. What happened next became one of the stories surrounding the weekend, with Jefferis eventually losing consciousness.

And there was an important detail MTV didn’t know.

Jefferis had previously suffered a serious head injury and had been advised not to drink alcohol or use hard drugs.

He hadn’t exactly mentioned that before accepting the greatest party invitation of his life.

The situation eventually became serious enough that Winnick went to the MTV representatives and told them what was happening. MTV personnel realized Jefferis needed to be separated from the party and took steps to keep him safe.

The next night, Jefferis took things much easier.

He still got the full Van Halen experience. He appeared onstage during the concert, was smashed with a cake and covered in champagne while the band played.

The weekend was everything MTV had promised.

And that was precisely why the movie seemed like such an obvious idea.

Then Van Halen Started Falling Apart

The problem was timing.

By the time MTV was seriously moving toward the movie, Van Halen was beginning to fracture.

The band’s enormous success had only made the personalities involved more difficult to contain. David Lee Roth had become a star almost as large as the band itself, while Eddie and Alex Van Halen were increasingly looking in different directions.

In December 1984, Roth released Crazy from the Heat, his solo EP.

Then came the videos.

His cover of “California Girls” became a huge MTV hit, and suddenly the idea of David Lee Roth as a solo star didn’t seem remotely ridiculous.

Roth wanted time away from Van Halen. Eddie wanted to get back into the studio.

The relationship was deteriorating.

Then Roth had another idea.

He wanted to make a movie.

Roth had been given a reported $20 million budget for a film based loosely on Crazy from the Heat, and he reportedly approached his bandmates about providing the music.

They weren’t interested.

By March 1985, David Lee Roth was out of Van Halen.

The timing couldn’t have been worse for MTV.

The Movie Lost Its Stars

Imagine trying to make a movie called Lost Weekend without Van Halen.

That was essentially the problem MTV suddenly faced.

The entire commercial appeal of the project was built around the fantasy of getting inside the world of one of the biggest rock bands on Earth. Remove Van Halen and you’ve removed the reason anybody wanted to see it in the first place.

And there was another problem.

The screenplay apparently wasn’t very good.

The concept had been irresistible. The script was another matter.

MTV could have theoretically tried again with another band. There were plenty of rock stars in 1980s America capable of supplying enough excess for an R-rated comedy.

But Lost Weekend wasn’t really about generic rock stars.

It was about Van Halen.

And Van Halen was no longer Van Halen.

The project disappeared.

The movie was never made.

MTV Eventually Made Movies. Just Not This One.

The irony is that MTV didn’t give up on movies.

It simply took another decade.

In 1996, MTV Films arrived with Joe’s Apartment, followed later that year by Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. The network eventually developed a surprisingly substantial film business, turning MTV properties and original concepts into theatrical releases. (⁠IMDb)

But by then, the world had changed.

The MTV that had sent two barely legal kids to Detroit to party with Van Halen belonged to another era.

The network that once built its identity around music videos eventually moved away from them almost entirely. The reckless promotional culture of the early 1980s gave way to something more corporate, more cautious and far more controlled.

Which makes Lost Weekend such a fascinating piece of lost Hollywood history.

Because the movie wasn’t merely ahead of its time.

It was the product of a time that was disappearing almost as quickly as the movie itself.

The Lost Weekend That Survived

Fortunately, the story didn’t disappear completely.

In 2019, filmmakers Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb premiered their short documentary Lost Weekend at the Tribeca Film Festival. Running roughly 14–15 minutes, the documentary features Kurt Jefferis and Tom Winnick telling the story of their extraordinary weekend with Van Halen. (⁠Tribeca)

And watching their story today makes you wonder what MTV’s fictionalized version might have looked like.

Maybe it would have been a terrible 1980s comedy.

Maybe it would have been another forgotten Porky’s knockoff.

Maybe the script really was as bad as some contemporary accounts suggested.

But that’s almost beside the point.

The real story was already better than anything Hollywood could have invented.

Two teenagers from Pennsylvania win a contest.

They fly to Detroit.

They meet Van Halen.

David Lee Roth puts one of them onstage.

The band dumps cake on his head and covers him in champagne.

Then the night gets considerably crazier.

MTV sees the footage, sees the ratings and sees a movie.

Then, just as Hollywood is getting ready to turn the whole thing into an R-rated rock-and-roll comedy, the band implodes.

David Lee Roth goes one way.

Eddie and Alex Van Halen go another.

And the movie goes nowhere.

That’s why Lost Weekend belongs in the category of movies we almost got.

It wasn’t a movie that existed only as a rumor.

There was a real contest. There were real winners. There was a real screenplay. There was a real producer. There was a real attempt to turn the madness into a feature film.

And then the very thing that made the movie possible—the wild, chaotic, completely unmanageable world of Van Halen—destroyed the possibility of making it.

MTV eventually made movies.

Van Halen eventually continued without David Lee Roth.

Kurt Jefferis and Tom Winnick went home with one hell of a story.

And somewhere in the archives, a 112-page screenplay remains as a reminder that, for a brief moment in 1984, MTV wasn’t just showing the fantasy of rock-and-roll excess.

It was about to make a movie about it.

Then Van Halen broke up.

And the weekend stayed lost.

There is a strange moment in Hollywood history that arrived in the early and mid-1980s.

For decades, the movie business had been exceptionally good at preserving its stars. Film was almost a form of immortality. Cary Grant could remain forever young in North by Northwest. Jimmy Stewart could always be George Bailey or Jefferson Smith. Bette Davis could forever be the woman audiences remembered from the great movies of the 1930s and 1940s.

Then, suddenly, the people inside those images started getting old.

And Hollywood had to figure out what to do with them.

This wasn’t the first time a major Hollywood star had died. Legends had been dying since the beginning of the business, sometimes tragically young, sometimes at the height of their fame, sometimes after their reputations had collapsed. But by the 1980s, Hollywood was confronting something different.

The first generation of movie stars was reaching the end of its life.

These weren’t simply famous actors. They were the people who had helped create the idea of the movie star in the first place.

The Golden Age Was Suddenly Getting Old

In 1981, audiences watched Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn in On Golden Pond, a film that approached old age with an almost startling tenderness.

Fonda and Hepburn were no longer pretending to be young. They were playing people confronting mortality, memory, family and the possibility that their time together was running out.

The film became a remarkable success, earning widespread acclaim and multiple Academy Awards. Fonda won Best Actor for his performance, an Oscar that is sometimes dismissed as a lifetime achievement award.

Those people probably haven’t seen On Golden Pond.

Because Fonda is genuinely wonderful in it.

He was also dying.

Fonda died in August 1982, only months after On Golden Pond was released and shortly before his Oscar win. The image of him accepting that award became something more than a celebration of a great performance. It was a farewell.

And Fonda would soon be followed by many of his contemporaries.

The glamorous movie stars of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s—the people who had lived in the pages of magazines and newspapers, whose faces had been preserved in perfect black-and-white photographs and immortalized on movie screens—were becoming elderly men and women.

When we think of Cary Grant, we think of North by Northwest, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby and the effortless sophistication of the Hollywood leading man.

When we think of Jimmy Stewart, we think of It’s a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or Rear Window.

But the Jimmy Stewart who existed in the 1980s was something else.

He was an elderly man.

And television allowed audiences to see him that way.

Stewart continued making appearances on television and on talk shows, where he could tell stories about the Hollywood he had known. He was charming, funny and gracious, but there was also something slightly surreal about seeing this legendary movie star as an old man sitting on a television set and remembering a world that no longer existed.

Then, in 1983, Stewart confronted aging in an even more direct way.

Jimmy Stewart and Bette Davis Wanted to Die Together

The 1983 HBO film Right of Way stars Stewart and Bette Davis as Teddy and Mini Dwyer, an elderly married couple facing the reality of Mini’s terminal illness.

They don’t want to wait around for death to make the decision for them.

They want to die together.

The couple begins putting their affairs in order, including giving away Mini’s collection of handmade dolls and dollhouses to people they believe will care for them.

Their adult daughter, Ruda, played by Melinda Dillon, cannot accept what her parents are planning. Terrified that she is about to lose both of them, she involves doctors and authorities and considers having them placed in a home.

The movie is somewhat too sentimental and soapy for its own good, and its direction isn’t really worthy of the two legends at its center.

But the idea is almost impossible to ignore.

Here were Jimmy Stewart and Bette Davis—two of the defining faces of classic Hollywood—playing elderly people who wanted the right to decide how their lives would end.

Stewart and Davis were born only a little more than a month apart in 1908. They belonged to the first generation of Americans who grew up with the movies becoming an increasingly dominant part of popular culture.

Now, more than seven decades later, they were playing people confronting the end of their lives.

And audiences were watching them do it.

Right of Way never became a major theatrical event. It was an HBO movie.

That seems appropriate in retrospect.

Hollywood could put its aging legends on television, where the subject could be confronted without quite having to announce that it was confronting it.

Then came Katharine Hepburn.

Katharine Hepburn Wanted Out

The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley is an even stranger movie.

Released in 1984, the film stars Hepburn as Grace Quigley, an elderly woman who has simply had enough of life. She has already attempted suicide twice and has concluded that she can’t even manage to kill herself properly.

Then she witnesses her landlord being murdered by a hitman.

Rather than run away, Grace follows the killer, Seymour, played by Nick Nolte, and asks him to kill her.

He is horrified.

Grace isn’t.

In fact, she has another idea.

She tells several of her elderly friends about Seymour and convinces them to hire him as well. Suddenly, what began as one woman’s desperate attempt to end her life becomes a bizarre little business enterprise involving elderly people who are ready to die.

It’s a very dark premise for a comedy, and the movie never quite figures out what it wants to be. The tone wanders, and by the end, the film retreats from the implications of its own story.

Grace ultimately decides she wants to live.

The movie itself seems to have the same change of heart.

Still, the premise is fascinating.

Hepburn had just come off On Golden Pond, where she had played opposite Henry Fonda in a film about aging and mortality. Now she was playing an elderly woman who wanted to arrange her own death.

The movie wasn’t treated particularly well by Cannon Films. It was cut, recut and eventually released under the shortened title Grace Quigley. It never received the kind of release that might have allowed it to find a substantial audience.

That was partly the result of Cannon’s famously chaotic approach to distribution.

But there is something almost symbolic about it.

Right of Way could be tucked away on HBO.

Grace Quigley could be mangled by Cannon.

Hollywood could keep moving.

But it couldn’t stop the clock.

And Then Cary Grant Died

Because eventually, the subject could no longer be confined to fiction.

On December 5, 1986, Cary Grant was in Davenport, Iowa, appearing as part of a nationwide speaking tour.

Grant had been away from the movies for nearly twenty years. His final film, Walk Don’t Run, had been released in 1966.

Yet Cary Grant hadn’t disappeared.

His movies remained.

His image remained.

His legend remained.

And audiences still wanted to see him.

Grant was speaking to fans in Davenport that night when he became ill. He was taken to the hospital, where he died early on December 6 at the age of 82.

The performance he was scheduled to give never happened.

It was an oddly appropriate ending for Cary Grant.

He had spent decades playing men who seemed almost incapable of aging. He was the epitome of Hollywood sophistication, the impossibly handsome leading man who could walk into any room and appear as though he belonged there.

And then he was gone.

Grant wasn’t the first great Hollywood star to die in the 1980s.

He was something more unsettling.

He was one of the ones everyone still remembered.

His death generated an enormous wave of grief and remembrance. People weren’t mourning only the man. They were mourning the world attached to him.

A world of studio lots and glamorous premieres. Of tuxedos and screwball comedies. Of stars whose faces had become larger than the people themselves.

Cary Grant represented that world perhaps more completely than anyone.

And now he was dead.

Hollywood Could No Longer Keep Its Stars Young

That, I think, is what makes these strange little movies from the early 1980s more interesting than they might initially appear.

On Golden Pond. Right of Way. The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley.

They are wildly different films. One is sentimental, one is uncomfortable, and one is a dark comedy that ultimately loses its nerve.

But together, they form a peculiar record of Hollywood confronting its own mortality.

For decades, movies had given audiences the illusion that their stars would never age.

The film stock didn’t change.

The performances didn’t change.

Cary Grant in North by Northwest would always be Cary Grant in North by Northwest. Jimmy Stewart would always be young enough to run through the snow in It’s a Wonderful Life. Bette Davis would always have that face. Katharine Hepburn would always be the fiercely independent woman striding across a Hollywood backlot.

The movies had frozen them in time.

But the people hadn’t been frozen.

They grew older.

They became sick.

They lost friends.

They confronted death.

And eventually, they died.

The 1980s were the decade when Hollywood’s first generation of movie stars became old enough for audiences to see that truth plainly.

It was uncomfortable because movies had spent half a century teaching us otherwise.

Maybe that’s why these films feel so strange now. They aren’t simply stories about old people. They are stories about what happens when immortality stops working.

And then Cary Grant died in Iowa.

Not on a movie set.

Not in a tuxedo beneath the Hollywood lights.

Not in the final scene of one of his movies.

He died in a hotel room after spending a lifetime becoming Cary Grant.

For generations of moviegoers, he had been almost impossibly permanent.

Then, suddenly, there was only the footage.

The movies remained.

The photographs remained.

The legend remained.

But the man was gone.

Hollywood had finally reached the point where it could no longer pretend that its golden age was still alive.

It was now something much more frightening.

It was history.

The Comedy Everyone Remembers—And the Tragedy They Don’t

Today, Cannonball Run is remembered as one of the defining comedies of the early 1980s.

People remember Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise clowning their way across America. They remember Farrah Fawcett at the height of her fame, Roger Moore spoofing James Bond, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., and Jackie Chan making one of his earliest appearances in an American film.

What almost no one remembers is that during production, one routine stunt went catastrophically wrong.

Four people were injured.

One young woman never walked again.

Her name was Heidi Von Beltz, and the accident that changed her life also changed Hollywood stunt safety forever.

A Dream of Hollywood

In June 1980, Heidi Von Beltz was just twenty-five years old.

She wasn’t a stunt performer by trade. She was an aspiring actress trying to establish herself in Hollywood, recently landing a small role on Charlie’s Angels. It wasn’t much, but it felt like the beginning of something bigger.

Like thousands of actors before and after her, however, steady work proved elusive.

Then opportunity arrived unexpectedly.

Her live-in boyfriend, veteran stunt coordinator Bobby Bass, was working on Hal Needham’s new Burt Reynolds comedy Cannonball Run. Production was underway in Colorado when the stuntwoman doubling for Farrah Fawcett had to leave because of a family emergency.

Bass needed a replacement immediately.

Heidi accepted the job.

Neither of them imagined that decision would alter the course of her life.

A Stunt That Never Should Have Happened

The sequence scheduled for June 25, 1980, wasn’t considered particularly spectacular.

Stunt driver Jim Nickerson, doubling for Burt Reynolds, would guide an Aston Martin through a line of five moving vehicles. It required precision but wasn’t outside the normal demands of stunt driving.

Nickerson, however, immediately became uneasy.

The Aston Martin wasn’t in proper condition.

Its tires were badly worn. Later investigations revealed additional problems, including a defective steering system, clutch, and speedometer.

Most astonishingly, the car had no seatbelts.

Even by the standards of 1980, it was a dangerously compromised vehicle.

Yet production moved forward anyway.

Disaster in Seconds

Inside the Aston Martin, Heidi Von Beltz and special effects technician Cliff Wenger Jr. operated a smoke machine while Nickerson drove.

The stunt unraveled almost immediately.

The defective steering and bald tires caused Nickerson to lose control, sending the Aston Martin directly into a van driven by fellow stuntman Jim Halty.

The impact was devastating.

Nickerson suffered severe lacerations.

Wenger was thrown completely from the vehicle, escaping with broken bones and cuts.

Von Beltz suffered the worst injuries.

Bracing herself against the dashboard during the collision, the force violently drove her left arm backward, crushing the vertebrae in her neck.

Her neck and back were broken.

She suffered multiple fractures throughout her body.

She was instantly paralyzed from the neck down.

Moments later, the Aston Martin burst into flames.

Crew members rushed to rescue Nickerson and Von Beltz before the burning wreck consumed them.

It almost became a fatal accident.

Fighting to Survive

Doctors airlifted Von Beltz to a nearby hospital.

Initially, they gave her little chance of surviving.

Weeks passed in intensive care before she stabilized.

Against extraordinary odds, she lived.

But the diagnosis never changed.

She was a quadriplegic.

Meanwhile, production on Cannonball Run barely slowed.

A replacement Aston Martin arrived, filming resumed, and within weeks Jim Nickerson had recovered enough to continue his stunt career.

Heidi Von Beltz would never regain the use of her arms or legs.

The Courtroom Battle

The condition of the Aston Martin seemed to make negligence obvious.

The vehicle lacked seatbelts.

Critical mechanical components were defective.

Evidence suggested concerns had been raised before filming began.

Von Beltz pursued workers’ compensation while also filing a negligence lawsuit against director Hal Needham, Stuntman, Inc., and the film’s producers.

Insurance settlements totaling more than one million dollars helped cover immediate medical costs, but they barely addressed the lifelong care she would require.

The litigation stretched on for years.

One early trial ended in a mistrial after jurors reportedly became divided over Von Beltz’s personal life rather than the facts surrounding the accident.

When the case was retried in 1986, the jury assigned 65 percent of the responsibility to Needham but also found Von Beltz 35 percent responsible for voluntarily riding in a car without a seatbelt.

Although damages were assessed at roughly $7 million, previous settlements and legal offsets reduced the final judgment against Needham to effectively nothing.

Years of appeals followed as insurers disputed responsibility, leaving much of the eventual compensation consumed by medical expenses and legal fees.

For Von Beltz, the legal victory felt hollow.

Thirty-Five Years of Courage

Many expected Heidi Von Beltz to die shortly after the accident.

Instead, she lived another thirty-five years.

She devoted herself to rehabilitation with remarkable determination and repeatedly insisted she would walk again someday.

Over time, she came to describe the accident as a “blessing in disguise,” believing it transformed her perspective on life despite the unimaginable cost.

She died on October 28, 2015, after suffering cardiac arrest.

She was sixty years old.

A Legacy Written in Safety Rules

The Cannonball Run accident remains one of Hollywood’s most infamous stunt disasters.

Its legacy extends far beyond a single film.

The tragedy helped accelerate major safety reforms throughout the industry. Seatbelt requirements became standard for stunt vehicles, directors lost much of their authority to make last-minute changes to dangerous stunt work, and stunt professionals gained stronger voices in demanding safer working conditions.

Many of the safety protocols that stunt performers now take for granted were strengthened because of what happened on that Colorado highway in June 1980.

Ironically, Cannonball Run became a massive box office success, earning more than $72 million domestically and spawning sequels.

The audience laughed.

The production moved on.

But for Heidi Von Beltz, the race ended before her Hollywood career ever truly began.

Her story deserves to be remembered alongside the film—not because it diminishes the movie, but because it reminds us of the human cost that sometimes lies hidden behind movie magic.

Released in 1981, just four years after Elvis Presley’s death, the film was created by Malcolm Leo and Andrew Solt, with the cooperation—and considerable assistance—of Elvis’ infamous manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It presents itself as a documentary, assembling archival footage, interviews, recordings, staged sequences and reenactments into a portrait of Elvis Presley.

But there is something deeply unsettling about the entire enterprise.

This isn’t simply a documentary that happens to show an unpleasant side of its subject. It is a film that seems fascinated by Elvis’ degradation. It doesn’t merely document the tragedy. It recreates it.

And that distinction matters.

Elvis Presley wasn’t a saint. He was a complicated, deeply flawed human being who made terrible decisions and suffered enormously from the machinery of fame. But being famous does not mean surrendering every shred of dignity, even after death.

No one deserved to have his final moments treated this way.

A Tribute That Feels Like Desecration

The truly perverse thing about This Is Elvis is that it seems to believe it is a loving tribute.

The filmmakers apparently wanted to venerate “The King.” They wanted to give audiences an intimate look behind the mythology and show them the man underneath.

Instead, they created something that frequently feels like a cinematic autopsy.

The movie asks us to recoil from a bloated, drug-addled Elvis inching toward his grave while simultaneously presenting the footage and dramatizations with the reverence normally reserved for sacred artifacts.

It’s as though the filmmakers have discovered the Shroud of Turin of rock ’n’ roll.

There is something almost obscene about the juxtaposition. Elvis’ suffering becomes evidence of authenticity. His physical decline becomes part of the entertainment. His humiliation becomes historical documentation.

The movie doesn’t seem to understand that showing everything isn’t necessarily the same thing as telling the truth.

Sometimes showing everything is simply cruelty.

Why Recreate Elvis’ Death?

The opening is particularly difficult to defend.

Elvis pulls into Graceland in his Cadillac. He waves to fans and enters the mansion with his girlfriend, Ginger Alden, played by an actress.

Then she discovers him dead on the bathroom floor.

This isn’t archival footage.

It is a recreation.

An Elvis impersonator is used to portray Presley, and the filmmakers reconstruct the environment in which he died. They don’t merely tell us that Elvis died. They stage his death and make us watch it.

Why?

What possible historical purpose does this serve?

There is a difference between documenting the circumstances surrounding someone’s death and turning the death itself into a dramatic set piece. This Is Elvis crosses that line almost immediately.

And then the movie has the audacity to place this staged death alongside legitimate archival footage of Elvis performing, appearing on television and interacting with the people around him.

Fact and fiction are stitched together until the audience is expected to accept the entire Frankenstein’s monster as documentary truth.

It’s an extraordinarily strange way to memorialize someone.

Found Footage Before Found Footage

Part of what makes This Is Elvis so disturbing is how much it anticipates the visual language of found-footage horror.

The film constantly blurs the boundary between reality and reconstruction. There are impersonators, staged interviews, dramatized scenes and a fabricated Elvis voiceover.

The audience is repeatedly forced to ask:

What am I actually watching?

That’s a potentially fascinating documentary technique.

But This Is Elvis doesn’t use ambiguity to explore the nature of celebrity, memory or myth. It uses ambiguity to make the movie more sensational.

A reenactment can be useful when a filmmaker is attempting to visualize something for which no footage exists. But when the reenactment is designed to make us believe we’re witnessing something that actually happened, the technique becomes profoundly manipulative.

The movie isn’t simply telling us Elvis’ story.

It’s manufacturing an experience of Elvis.

And that experience is frequently designed to make us uncomfortable.

A Cash Grab Masquerading as History

Then there is Colonel Tom Parker.

Parker was hardly a disinterested guardian of Elvis’ legacy. His entire relationship with Presley was built around managing the Elvis Presley business.

For This Is Elvis, Parker helped provide access to Graceland and to Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley. That access gives the film an extraordinary amount of material: private footage, intimate moments and glimpses of Elvis away from the stage.

Some of this material is genuinely fascinating.

That’s what makes the movie so frustrating.

There are moments when This Is Elvis gets tantalizingly close to the documentary it could have been. We see Elvis relaxing in limousines, surrounded by friends and associates. We hear him talk about women. We see the strange world that developed around him.

But the film doesn’t know when to stop looking.

It becomes less interested in understanding Elvis than in exposing him.

The private man becomes another piece of footage.

The vulnerable man becomes another attraction.

The dying man becomes another scene.

And somewhere along the way, Elvis Presley stops being a person and becomes a product again.

The Icon as Product

By 1981, Elvis had already begun to pass from living performer into cultural artifact.

His death in 1977 transformed him into something larger than the man himself. He became mythology. He became kitsch. He became an endless source of impersonators, merchandise, jokes, conspiracy theories and tabloid stories.

This Is Elvis arrives right in the middle of that transformation.

And rather than challenging the machinery surrounding Elvis, it feeds it.

The film wants to convince us that we’re seeing the real Elvis.

But what is the “real” Elvis?

The young man shaking the foundations of American popular culture?

The movie star?

The Las Vegas performer in the jeweled jumpsuit?

The husband and father?

The drug-dependent celebrity surrounded by people who were increasingly afraid to tell him no?

The film’s answer seems to be: all of them.

But assembling every possible version of Elvis doesn’t necessarily create a deeper understanding of him. Sometimes it simply creates a more complete spectacle.

By the end, it feels less like we’re learning who Elvis Presley was and more like we’re watching his corpse being picked clean.

Cruelty Masquerading as Honesty

Defenders of the film can argue that This Is Elvis deserves credit for refusing to sanitize its subject.

And there is some truth to that.

Elvis’ decline shouldn’t be erased from history. His drug use, declining health and deteriorating performances are important parts of his story.

But “warts and all” is not a magic phrase that excuses everything.

Honesty requires context.

The film’s fake interviews, impersonators and reconstructions aren’t inherently honest simply because they’re depicting unpleasant things. The very act of reconstructing reality changes it.

And then there is the concert footage.

Elvis had once seemed almost superhuman on stage. Now we see him forgetting lyrics, stumbling, appearing confused and struggling to maintain control.

Again, this is real footage.

And again, the question isn’t whether it should exist.

The question is why the filmmakers want us to watch it this way.

There is a difference between documenting a performer in decline and making his decline the spectacle.

Elvis was already dead.

We already knew how the story ended.

Why make us watch him fail?

The tragedy wasn’t that Elvis could no longer live up to the myth. The tragedy was that a human being had been trapped inside that myth for so long that, by the end, almost everyone seemed more interested in preserving Elvis Presley the commodity than protecting Elvis Presley the person.

Watching a Man Die Twice

This is ultimately what makes This Is Elvis so uncomfortable.

Elvis Presley died in 1977.

But this movie seems determined to make him die again.

The first death was physical.

The second is the destruction of whatever privacy, dignity and mystery remained after his death.

And perhaps that’s why the film plays so much like a horror movie.

There is a corpse at the center of it.

Everyone around that corpse wants something.

Money.

Access.

Attention.

A piece of the mythology.

A piece of the man.

And the audience is invited to participate.

This Is Elvis and the Culture of Exploitation

I despise This Is Elvis.

I don’t merely dislike it. I find its entire approach to its subject deeply disturbing.

The film isn’t offensive because it tells us Elvis was flawed. It is offensive because it seems unable to recognize the difference between revealing a person’s humanity and exploiting their vulnerability.

That’s a distinction that has only become more important in the decades since.

In that sense, This Is Elvis reminds me of Blonde (2022), Andrew Dominik’s grotesque fictionalized treatment of Marilyn Monroe. The two films are radically different in form, but they share an unsettling impulse: the belief that the most intimate, painful and humiliating moments in the lives of famous people somehow belong to us.

They don’t.

Fame may make someone public.

It does not make them public property.

This Is Elvis mistakes access for intimacy and cruelty for honesty. It takes a man who had already spent his entire adult life being consumed by an audience and asks us to consume whatever is left.

That isn’t preservation.

It’s grave robbery.

Elvis deserved better.

So did Marilyn Monroe.

And so does anyone who becomes famous enough to stop being treated like a human being.

Sometimes the most respectful thing a filmmaker can do is simply put the camera down.

Author’s Note: We Love The Eurhymics. Sexcrimes is a song that goes so hard and that synth sound was one of the few of the 1980s that has aged beautifully beneath Annie Lennox’s sexy androgyny. That’s why we were surprised by this story. Just when you think you know everything about a band, you find a story you’ve not heard before. For us, this is that story.

There is something almost too perfect about the Eurythmics scoring 1984.

In 1984, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were one of the biggest musical acts in Britain. Their album Touch had become a major success, and “Here Comes the Rain Again” had established the duo as something far more substantial than another synth-pop act.

And yet, when they were hired to score Michael Radford’s film adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984, Lennox and Stewart were in a strange position.

They were living in the Bahamas, effectively exiled from returning home to England because of tax problems. They needed the work. They didn’t have their usual backing band or equipment with them.

Then came an offer from their record company.

Virgin Records wanted them to write the soundtrack for a movie.

It sounded like an opportunity.

Instead, it became a nightmare.

First, Virgin wanted David Bowie

The movie was 1984, Michael Radford’s adaptation of George Orwell’s legendary dystopian novel.

Radford had approached the material with unusual seriousness. He wanted the movie to feel grim, oppressive and faithful to Orwell rather than like another futuristic science-fiction spectacle.

Virgin Films, which was financing and distributing the picture, had other ambitions.

The company had acquired the rights with the hope of turning the project into something commercially viable, and music was obviously going to be an important part of that.

The first choice for the soundtrack was David Bowie.

Bowie said no.

So Virgin turned to the Eurythmics.

It was an inspired choice on paper.

Lennox and Stewart had already built an entire musical identity around synthesizers, electronic textures and an unmistakably cold, futuristic sound. Their music could sound romantic one minute and deeply unsettling the next.

If you were making a movie about a society in which human beings have been reduced to frightened components of a gigantic machine, the Eurythmics were hardly an unreasonable choice.

There was only one problem.

The director hadn’t really chosen them.

The movie was already in trouble

The production of 1984 had been difficult almost from the beginning.

Radford was determined to make the film on his terms, and that determination came with a price. Virgin Films had initially given the production a budget of approximately $2.5 million. By the time the film was finished, that figure had grown to roughly $5.5 million.

And there was already a score.

Composer Dominic Muldowney had written a full orchestral score for the movie.

Then Virgin Films decided it wasn’t good enough.

Virgin executive Peter Devereaux later described Muldowney’s work as “halfhearted.”

That decision set the stage for everything that followed.

Virgin put the production in contact with the Eurythmics, and Lennox and Stewart were given a black-and-white VHS screener of the movie.

They had roughly two months before the film’s scheduled release.

They went to work.

For ten days, the two musicians immersed themselves in the movie and created a completely new score.

They worked in the musical language they knew: synthesizers, electronic textures, stark rhythms and an increasingly industrial sound.

It was not an orchestral imitation of a Hollywood movie score.

It sounded like the Eurythmics.

And, more importantly, they believed they were doing exactly what they had been hired to do.

According to Lennox and Stewart, they remained in regular communication with the production during the process.

Nobody told them that Michael Radford hated the idea.

Nobody told them that another score already existed.

Nobody told them that the director considered the Eurythmics fundamentally inappropriate for his movie.

As far as Lennox and Stewart knew, they had been given a job.

They did it.

Then the movie came out.

And the director publicly declared war on their music.

“Crass rubbish”

The Eurythmics were blindsided.

On November 19, 1984, at the Standard Film Awards, Radford spoke publicly about the soundtrack and made it clear that the Eurythmics had not been his choice.

He said they had been “foisted upon him” by Virgin Films.

Then he went considerably further.

“When I heard the soundtrack,” Radford said, “I thought it was crass rubbish.”

He added that he had nothing against the Eurythmics personally, but argued that there was no way a group could produce an appropriate soundtrack in ten days.

It was a brutal thing to hear after spending ten days doing exactly what you had been hired to do.

And it exposed the absurdity at the heart of the entire situation.

The Eurythmics hadn’t barged into Radford’s movie.

They hadn’t demanded to score 1984.

They had been hired.

They had been given a film.

They had written music for it.

And only after the work was finished did they discover that the director considered their involvement an intrusion.

Lennox later described feeling like “spectators in a circus of jugglers” while Virgin executives, Radford and producer Simon Perry fought over the soundtrack in public.

Stewart was less diplomatic, reportedly calling Perry a “two-faced rat.”

The anger was understandable.

The Eurythmics maintained that they would never have accepted the job had they known Radford objected to their involvement.

And then the money became another problem.

$600,000 for ten days

At some point during the increasingly public fight, Radford and Perry learned that the Eurythmics had reportedly been paid around $600,000 for their ten days of work.

That was an enormous amount of money in the context of a $5.5 million movie.

It was also reportedly more than Radford, Perry, John Hurt or Richard Burton had been paid for their work on the film.

Suddenly, the soundtrack wasn’t simply an artistic dispute.

It was a business problem.

Virgin Films owned the movie.

And Virgin decided to use the Eurythmics score.

The irony was that the company had already created another mess.

When 1984 opened in England, the movie initially contained a mixture of the Eurythmics music and Muldowney’s original score.

The Eurythmics objected.

Their position was essentially simple: use the score they had been hired to make or don’t use it.

Three weeks after the initial English release, Virgin changed the film.

The Eurythmics’ complete score replaced the earlier mixture.

And, remarkably, ticket sales reportedly increased after the change.

For a brief moment, the controversy may actually have helped the movie.

But Radford wasn’t going to accept it.

Two versions of 1984

Radford took his own cut of the film to territories where Virgin Films could not easily prevent him from showing it.

In places including Rio de Janeiro, audiences saw versions of 1984 containing Muldowney’s full orchestral score rather than the Eurythmics soundtrack.

Radford was so unhappy with the situation that he pulled the film from competition at the BAFTA Awards.

The movie had effectively become two movies.

One belonged to Virgin.

The other belonged to its director.

And both were being presented as 1984.

That is what makes the whole story so strangely appropriate.

Orwell’s novel is about a system that controls reality by controlling information.

Who gets to determine what is true?

Who gets to decide what people remember?

Who owns the story?

By 1984, those questions were no longer confined to Orwell’s fictional Ministry of Truth.

They were being fought over in real life by a director, a film company, a record company, a composer and two pop musicians.

And then there was the Eurythmics album

For all the chaos, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart ultimately got something substantial out of the experience.

Their soundtrack became a full-length Eurythmics album, 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother).

It reached the Top Five in Britain.

Its lead single, “Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four),” went to Number One in the UK.

In America, the situation was different.

Major radio stations were reluctant to play a song called “Sexcrime,” limiting its exposure and keeping the single from becoming the hit it had been in Britain.

The movie itself eventually earned more than $8 million at the American box office, enough to turn a modest profit, but nowhere near enough to transform 1984 into the major prestige success Virgin had hoped for.

And there was another problem.

The Orwell Estate.

Even Orwell’s estate took sides

The Orwell Estate had been won over by Radford’s determination to make a faithful adaptation of the novel.

Virgin had apparently gone to extraordinary lengths to secure the rights, including obtaining the cooperation of Orwell’s dying wife, Sonia Brownell, just four days before her death.

When the soundtrack controversy erupted, the Orwell Estate sided with Radford and Perry.

They publicly condemned Virgin’s handling of the production and argued that the company had betrayed the understanding under which the Orwell estate had agreed to the film.

For a movie based on a novel about the destruction of individual freedom, it was a remarkably fitting final chapter.

Almost everyone involved believed somebody else had taken control of 1984 away from them.

Radford believed Virgin had taken control of his movie.

The Eurythmics believed Virgin had put them into a fight they didn’t know existed.

Virgin believed it owned the movie and therefore had the right to determine what went into it.

The Orwell Estate believed the company had betrayed the spirit of the adaptation.

And somewhere in the middle was Dominic Muldowney, whose original score had been commissioned, completed and then largely discarded.

The strangest part is that nobody really won

The Eurythmics got a hit album out of the mess.

Virgin got a movie that made money, but not the awards-season splash it wanted.

Radford got his version of 1984 shown in parts of the world, but he couldn’t control the version that Virgin ultimately released.

The Orwell Estate got to publicly object, but couldn’t undo what had happened.

And 1984 itself became a strange historical artifact: a movie that exists in competing versions, accompanied by a soundtrack whose creation became almost as controversial as the film it was supposed to accompany.

The Eurythmics’ involvement is particularly strange because, viewed from the outside, it seems almost inevitable.

Who better to score 1984 in 1984 than Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart?

Their sound already belonged to that world.

Cold synthesizers.

Mechanical rhythms.

Human voices buried inside electronic machinery.

Music that could sound beautiful and threatening at the same time.

The tragedy was that the people making the movie couldn’t agree on whether that was exactly what 1984 needed.

In the end, the soundtrack controversy became its own little Orwellian nightmare.

Everybody had a different version of reality.

Everybody believed somebody else was manipulating it.

And nobody could agree on which 1984 was the real one.

Perhaps that is the most fitting legacy of all.

For a movie about a world where the people in power control the story, 1984 spent its own real-life production fighting over who got to tell it.

The Funhouse is certainly a lesser part of Tobe Hooper’s filmography. It’s slipped into forgotten status over the years simply because Hooper’s other works greatly surpass it in quality.

For my money, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn’t just the greatest horror movie ever made—it’s one of the most important American films of the twentieth century.

To me, Tobe Hooper’s masterpiece feels like America’s cultural hangover after the 1960s. The optimism of peace, love, and social revolution had given way to Vietnam, the Manson murders, political assassinations, and a growing sense that the country had lost its innocence. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn’t simply scare audiences; it captured that anxiety in a way few films ever have.

The problem with making a masterpiece is that you have to follow it.

Where do you go after you’ve redefined an entire genre?

Hooper spent much of the next decade trying to answer that question. While Poltergeist became his biggest commercial success—though forever shadowed by debates over Steven Spielberg’s involvement—many of his other films never found the same cultural impact. Among them was 1981’s The Funhouse, an ambitious horror film that has quietly earned a loyal following over the years.

I can certainly admire what Hooper was trying to do.

I’m just not convinced he completely pulled it off.

More Monster Movie Than Slasher

The premise is simple enough.

Teenager Amy Harper (Elizabeth Berridge) and three friends spend an evening at a traveling carnival. After deciding to hide inside the carnival’s funhouse after closing time, they accidentally witness a murder. Trapped inside the attraction, they soon discover the carnival’s biggest monster isn’t one of the exhibits.

It sounds like the setup for a straightforward slasher.

It isn’t.

That’s both the film’s greatest strength and its biggest weakness.

Watching The Funhouse, it became clear to me that Hooper wasn’t particularly interested in making another body-count picture. Instead, he seems fascinated by old-school monster movies, carnival sideshows, and the grotesque tradition of classic horror. The film feels less inspired by the slashers dominating the early 1980s than by Universal’s monsters and Tod Browning’s Freaks.

The result is something stranger than audiences probably expected.

Atmosphere First, Momentum Second

Unfortunately, Hooper’s ambitions come at the expense of pacing.

The first hour wanders through carnival attractions, games, fortune tellers, and sideshows while Amy and her friends flirt, joke, and drift from one attraction to another. Hooper creates a wonderfully grimy carnival atmosphere, but the story barely moves. For long stretches, the audience is left waiting for the horror promised by the title.

When the action finally shifts inside the funhouse itself, the movie comes alive.

The suspense tightens.

The kills become more effective.

The elaborate maze-like setting finally pays dividends as Hooper reminds us how gifted he is at creating tension through space and atmosphere. The final act delivers the kind of relentless horror the earlier portions only hint at.

By then, however, the film has spent so much time getting there that it’s difficult to ignore how uneven the journey has been.

A Love Letter to Classic Horror

One of the film’s most interesting qualities is how openly it wears its influences.

The opening sequence playfully nods toward both Halloween and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, signaling immediately that Hooper is engaging in a conversation with horror history rather than simply copying contemporary trends.

That affection for classic horror carries through to the film’s central monster.

Initially hidden beneath a Frankenstein-style rubber mask, the carnival’s killer eventually reveals a grotesque face that recalls everything from The Elephant Man to Freaks. Rather than presenting another anonymous masked slasher, Hooper creates a tragic, deformed monster that belongs more to Gothic horror than the slasher boom.

It’s an intriguing creative decision.

I’m simply not sure the screenplay ever develops that idea as fully as it deserves.

The Forgotten Middle Child

The Funhouse has become something of a cult favorite over the decades, and that’s understandable. Its production design is excellent, the carnival setting remains wonderfully creepy, and Hooper’s gift for creating unsettling imagery never disappeared after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

What never quite comes together is the story surrounding those strengths.

The characters are thinly drawn, the pacing repeatedly stalls, and the narrative spends too much time delaying the inevitable. Hooper clearly wants to merge the atmosphere of classic monster movies with the visceral energy of modern horror, but the two halves never completely fuse into a satisfying whole.

It’s a fascinating experiment.

It’s just not an entirely successful one.

Final Thoughts

Maybe that’s the real legacy of The Funhouse.

After changing horror forever with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tobe Hooper spent much of his career chasing different kinds of monsters. The Funhouse proves he never lost his remarkable eye for unsettling imagery or his ability to create oppressive atmosphere. What it lacks is the singular idea that made Chainsaw one of the defining American films of its era.

That doesn’t make The Funhouse a failure.

It makes it an interesting near miss—a forgotten horror film from a great filmmaker reaching for something more ambitious than another routine slasher. It doesn’t entirely succeed, but it’s far more fascinating than its reputation might suggest.

One of Mann’s boldest decisions was rejecting a traditional jazz or orchestral score in favor of the German electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream.

The choice changed everything.

Their synthesizers don’t simply accompany the action—they become the emotional language of the film. The music pulses through Chicago’s streets like electricity, transforming routine surveillance and careful preparation into something almost transcendent.

Long before Miami Vice, before Scarface, before synthesizers became shorthand for the decade, Thief had already discovered what the 1980s would sound like.

The soundtrack gives the film an otherworldly quality. Hard steel, broken glass, and concrete streets somehow become strangely beautiful beneath its electronic heartbeat.

Michael Mann’s Blueprint

Nearly every theme Michael Mann would spend the next four decades exploring appears here in its purest form.

Professionals who define themselves entirely through their work.

The blurred distinction between criminals and law enforcement.

Cities that become emotional landscapes.

Characters convinced discipline can conquer chaos.

Frank believes he can impose order on an unpredictable world. He creates rules. He follows procedures. He trusts professionalism above everything else.

Mann’s films repeatedly question that belief.

Whether it’s Manhunter, Heat, Collateral, or Miami Vice, his characters eventually discover that no amount of preparation can protect them from life itself.

Visually, cinematographer Donald Thorin helped establish the unmistakable Mann aesthetic: metallic blues, pools of reflected light, silhouettes swallowed by darkness, and cities illuminated by neon instead of sunshine. It’s realism transformed into modern noir.

The Film That Taught the 1980s How to Look

The influence of Thief stretches across decades of crime cinema.

Films like To Live and Die in L.A., Drive, The Terminator, and even Mann’s own Heat all carry echoes of what was accomplished here. The minimalist dialogue. The obsessive attention to craft. The lonely antihero moving through a city alive with artificial light.

But influence alone doesn’t explain why Thief continues to resonate.

Underneath all of Mann’s immaculate style lies genuine tragedy. Frank can steal diamonds worth millions of dollars, crack vaults no one else can open, and outthink almost anyone he encounters.

The one thing he cannot take is the ordinary life he desperately wants.

When the final explosion fades and Frank disappears into the darkness alone, it feels less like the ending of a movie than the beginning of an era.

The 1980s would become filled with stylish crime films bathed in neon.

None would ever feel quite this honest.

Combined with the remastered surround soundtrack supervised by Mann himself, Tangerine Dream’s iconic score has rarely sounded so immersive.

The supplements focus less on quantity than quality. A feature-length commentary with Michael Mann and James Caan offers invaluable insight into the film’s relentless pursuit of authenticity, while interviews with Mann, Caan, and Tangerine Dream’s Johannes Schmoelling explore the creative decisions that made Thief unlike anything audiences had seen in 1981. An accompanying essay by Nick James thoughtfully places the film at the crossroads between the gritty realism of the New Hollywood era and the stylized crime cinema that followed.

Like many of Criterion’s finest releases, this edition isn’t about overwhelming viewers with bonus features. It’s about preserving a landmark film with the care and respect it deserves.

More than forty years later, Thief still feels startlingly modern. Every Extra Dreams of Being Remembered

The life of a movie extra is an exercise in patience.

Most days consist of long hours standing around, waiting for cameras to roll, all for modest pay and little recognition. Ask anyone who has worked as a background performer and they’ll tell you it’s a thankless job, albeit one that offers a foothold in the film industry while bigger opportunities are pursued.

Others become extras simply because production has come to town. For local residents, it can be an unforgettable experience—sharing the same set as famous actors and, years later, pointing at the screen and saying, “That’s me in the background.”

Few extras ever become part of Hollywood history.

Jeffrey Klein did.

Not because audiences spotted him in Colors, but because Sean Penn punched him on the film’s set.

A Bad Time to Pull Out a Camera

It was April 2, 1987.

Director Dennis Hopper was in the middle of filming Colors, his gritty Los Angeles police drama starring Robert Duvall as seasoned LAPD officer Bob Hodges and Sean Penn as his volatile young partner, Danny McGavin.

Between setups, production paused while Hopper prepared the next shot.

During the downtime, Jeffrey Klein pulled out a camera.

Whether he simply wanted a souvenir from the day’s filming or hoped to capture a candid photograph of the stars has never been publicly established. What is known is that Sean Penn noticed.

And in 1987, that was about the worst possible time to be seen pointing a camera at Sean Penn.

Hollywood’s Most Combustible Young Star

By the late 1980s, Penn had developed a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most intensely talented—and most hot-tempered—actors.

His marriage to Madonna had become constant tabloid fodder, with photographers following the couple almost everywhere they went. Candid photographs of the pair could command significant prices, and some paparazzi deliberately provoked Penn, shouting personal insults or inflammatory questions in hopes of capturing an angry reaction.

Only weeks before the confrontation on the Colors set, Penn had already been making headlines following an altercation at a nightclub involving a man he believed was attempting to photograph Madonna.

Against that backdrop, seeing someone unexpectedly raising a camera nearby was enough to ignite another confrontation.

The Punch That Overshadowed the Pause Between Takes

Accounts of the incident agree on the broad sequence of events, even if some details differ.

Penn confronted Klein after spotting the camera. The encounter quickly escalated into a heated verbal exchange. According to reports from the time, the two men spat at one another before Penn struck Klein several times in the face. Crew members intervened before the confrontation could escalate further, and Klein was escorted away from the set.

Ironically, the photographs that triggered the entire incident have never surfaced publicly.

The production itself barely missed a beat.

Despite the headline-grabbing altercation, Colors continued filming without any widely reported delays. Neither Dennis Hopper nor Robert Duvall publicly commented on the incident, and work carried on as scheduled.

From Tabloid Headline to Courtroom

By the time the case reached court, Penn had already left the United States to begin filming Judgment in Berlin in Germany.

Because the altercation violated the terms of his existing probation, the judge sentenced Penn to 60 days in jail but allowed him to complete his overseas filming before reporting to serve his sentence. Some columnists criticized what they viewed as preferential treatment for a celebrity, while the court maintained that Penn would still be required to serve his time upon returning to the United States.

He ultimately served just over a month before being released for good behavior.

The incident became another entry in the long list of Sean Penn controversies that defined his public image during the 1980s.

The Forgotten Man in a Famous Story

Sean Penn would eventually leave much of his tabloid reputation behind, earning widespread acclaim for the intensity of his performances and establishing himself as one of the most respected actors of his generation.

Jeffrey Klein, meanwhile, faded back into anonymity.

His name survives today almost entirely because of one ordinary decision between takes on a movie set. He raised a camera hoping to preserve a memory from the making of a film. Instead, he became part of one of the strangest behind-the-scenes stories of the decade.

Thousands of extras have appeared in Hollywood productions without anyone ever knowing their names.

There are moments when you stop watching a movie and start seeing a studio.

The Last American Virgin was one of those moments for me.

What if I told you that it’s 1982 and the movie you’re about to see features music by U2, The Police, Blondie, Devo, Oingo Boingo, The Waitresses, Tommy Tutone, Journey, REO Speedwagon, and The Commodores?

That’s an absurd amount of musical firepower for one soundtrack. Looking at those names today, you’d probably assume you were talking about a major studio release with a massive marketing campaign behind it.

Instead, you’re talking about a Cannon Films teen sex comedy.

And that’s what makes The Last American Virgin so fascinating.

The movie itself has developed something of a cult following over the years, thanks largely to its surprisingly bittersweet ending, but the soundtrack has become almost a forgotten artifact. Despite being packed with some of the biggest names on radio, the official soundtrack album failed to make much of an impression. Neither the album nor the film became the breakout success Cannon hoped for.

But looking back more than forty years later, I don’t think the soundtrack’s commercial failure is the interesting part.

I think it accidentally revealed the Cannon Films source code.

The Prototype

Before Cannon became synonymous with Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson, ninja movies, and impossible ambition, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus were still trying to figure out how to sell movies to American audiences.

Their greatest success in Israel had come through the enormously popular Lemon Popsicle series, directed primarily by Boaz Davidson. Those films mixed teenage sex comedy with wall-to-wall contemporary pop music, creating an irresistible package for young audiences. The formula worked so well that bringing it to America seemed like the obvious next step.

The Last American Virgin wasn’t just a remake of Lemon Popsicle.

It was Cannon testing whether its entire business model could survive the trip across the Atlantic.

Released on July 31, 1982, the film opened quietly, earning less than a million dollars in its opening weekend before eventually finishing with around $5.2 million domestically. Since Cannon never publicly disclosed the production budget, it’s impossible to know whether the film actually turned a profit.

The soundtrack, meanwhile, never came close to becoming the hit its song list suggested it should have been.

On paper, everything looked right.

In practice, audiences simply shrugged.

Buying Recognition

That’s when the pattern starts to emerge.

Watching The Last American Virgin today, it feels less like another Cannon production and more like the company discovering how it wanted to sell movies.

If Cannon couldn’t afford the biggest movie stars, maybe it could surround its films with recognizable names somewhere else.

In this case, those names belonged to musicians.

The songs became the stars.

The soundtrack became the marketing campaign.

The movie simply had to ride their coattails.

Once you recognize that instinct, you start seeing it everywhere in Cannon’s history.

It wasn’t really about originality. It was about borrowing familiarity. Find something audiences already loved—hit songs, bestselling novels, comic books, television shows, famous actors—and build a low-budget production around that recognition.

Sometimes the results were inspired.

Sometimes they were gloriously chaotic.

But the philosophy rarely changed.

The Cannon Code

The more Cannon’s history unfolds, the more The Last American Virgin feels like the company’s rough draft.

A couple of years later, Cannon would chase another youth trend with Breakin’, this time finding the cultural phenomenon they had been searching for. The studio would license music, embrace MTV culture, and suddenly discover that the formula actually worked.

The same mindset would eventually lead them toward action stars, comic book heroes, toy lines, literary adaptations, and major studio franchises. The details changed, but the thinking remained remarkably consistent.

Recognizable name.

Aggressive marketing.

Modest production.

Maximum ambition.

That’s the Cannon formula.

Or at least, it’s the beginning of it.

Why This Movie Matters

The Last American Virgin isn’t important because it launched a franchise or dominated the box office.

It’s important because it captures Cannon Films before the world knew what Cannon Films was.

You can almost watch Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus teaching themselves how to market American movies in real time. They’re experimenting. They’re borrowing. They’re throwing recognizable names at inexpensive productions and hoping audiences will connect the dots.

Sometimes they did.

Sometimes they didn’t.

But the blueprint was already there.

Looking back, the biggest star of The Last American Virgin wasn’t any actor on screen.

It was the strategy hiding underneath it.

And once you see that strategy, you start seeing it in almost every Cannon movie that followed.

Maybe that’s the real legacy of The Last American Virgin. Not that it was a forgotten teen comedy with an incredible soundtrack, but that it quietly revealed the playbook that would define one of Hollywood’s most fascinating, improbable, and entertaining studios.

Controversial opinion alert: I think Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the best Indiana Jones movie.

Before you click away in disgust, allow me to make my case.

I don’t expect to change your mind. In fact, I’m not even sure I can make an objective argument that Temple of Doom is a better film than Raiders of the Lost Ark. I understand that this is a matter of personal taste, and your opinion isn’t any less valid than mine.

I simply want the chance to explain why Temple of Doom has never left mine.

From its dazzling opening moments to its thrilling finale, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is, for me, the most relentlessly entertaining adventure Steven Spielberg ever directed. It isn’t just one of my favorite action movies. It’s one of the movies that made me fall in love with movies.

Spielberg’s Greatest Roller Coaster

The film opens in spectacular fashion.

Inside Club Obi-Wan, Willie Scott, played by Kate Capshaw, dazzles the audience with a lavish musical number that immediately tells us everything we need to know about her character. She’s glamorous, dramatic, and completely out of her depth once the adventure begins.

At the same time, Indiana Jones is making what should have been a simple exchange with a room full of gangsters. He’s recovered an ancient artifact. They’re supposed to hand over an enormous diamond. Naturally, everyone betrays everyone else.

Within minutes, Indy has been poisoned, the antidote is rolling across the floor, Willie is chasing the diamond, bullets are flying in every direction, and Spielberg transforms the nightclub into one giant comic playground.

It’s one of the greatest action sequences of the 1980s because every prop becomes part of the storytelling. The giant gong isn’t just a clever visual gag—it’s an ingenious action beat as Indy uses it like a shield while machine-gun fire rains down around him. The scene never stops moving, yet Spielberg never loses the audience. Every joke leads to another stunt. Every stunt leads to another laugh.

By the time Indy and Willie crash through a window, tumble down a series of awnings, and land in front of Short Round’s waiting getaway car, the movie has already established its personality. It’s loud, funny, unpredictable, and gloriously over-the-top.

The plane escape that follows ends with one of my favorite visual jokes in the entire series. Indy flashes that wonderfully smug Harrison Ford grin, convinced he’s escaped his pursuers, only to discover he’s just traded one impossible situation for another.

It barely makes logical sense.

It doesn’t have to.

It’s funny.

Spielberg at the Height of His Powers

What makes Temple of Doom so fascinating is its tone.

The original Raiders of the Lost Ark is a loving tribute to the Saturday matinee serials that inspired George Lucas and Steven Spielberg as children. Temple of Doom broadens those influences. You can see echoes of Errol Flynn swashbucklers, screwball comedies, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby road pictures, and old Hollywood musicals all colliding inside one movie.

Only Spielberg could make those wildly different influences feel like they belonged together.

One minute we’re laughing at Willie screaming over elephants and bugs.

The next we’re watching hearts ripped from chests, children enslaved in mines, and a terrifying cult worshipping beneath a palace.

On paper, it sounds impossible.

On screen, it somehow works.

Spielberg’s greatest gift has always been his ability to balance wonder, terror, comedy, and excitement without losing control of the audience. I honestly think Temple of Doom may be the finest example of that balancing act in his entire career.

The Conversation Around the Film

It’s impossible to discuss Temple of Doom today without acknowledging the criticism it has received for its depiction of India and its use of cultural stereotypes.

Those criticisms deserve to be taken seriously. I would encourage anyone interested in the subject to seek out Indian critics and critics of color who have written thoughtfully about the film and decide for themselves where they stand.

I don’t believe those conversations diminish the movie.

If anything, they help us better understand both the film and the era that produced it. Great movies aren’t beyond criticism, and acknowledging a film’s shortcomings doesn’t erase everything it accomplishes artistically.

Holding both ideas at the same time isn’t a contradiction.

It’s simply part of loving cinema.

The Character Who Made Me Believe I Could Go on the Adventure

If there’s one reason Temple of Doom became my Indiana Jones movie, it has a name.

Short Round.

Ke Huy Quan created one of the great child sidekicks in movie history. He’s brave without being fearless. Clever without being unbelievable. Funny without becoming annoying.

Most importantly, he felt like a real kid.

When I first saw Temple of Doom in 1984, I was eight years old.

Short Round wasn’t just my favorite character.

He was me.

He wasn’t the world’s greatest archaeologist. He wasn’t throwing punches like Indiana Jones. He was simply a kid who somehow found himself riding alongside the greatest adventurer in the world.

Every child dreams about being invited onto the adventure.

For me, Short Round was that invitation.

Eight Years Old Forever

Some of my happiest childhood memories are wrapped up in this movie.

After seeing Temple of Doom, my brother, sister, and I played the board game endlessly. If memory serves, it even featured the mine cart chase, which had already become my favorite action sequence in any movie.

I can still remember sitting in the theater, hiding behind my hands as the mine carts raced through those impossibly dangerous tunnels.

I genuinely thought my heroes were going to die.

That’s the wonderful thing about being eight years old.

You haven’t learned to keep movies at arm’s length yet.

You’re completely inside them.

Watching Temple of Doom today feels like stepping into a time machine. I don’t hide behind my fingers anymore, but I still feel my pulse quicken during the mine cart chase. I still lean forward during the rope bridge sequence. I still find myself grinning when John Williams’ magnificent score swells at exactly the right moment.

The years disappear.

For a little while, I’m eight years old again.

Why This Will Always Be My Indiana Jones Movie

I understand why most people choose Raiders of the Lost Ark as the greatest Indiana Jones film.

They’re probably right.

It’s the tighter screenplay. The more elegant adventure. The more influential masterpiece.

But favorite and best aren’t always the same thing.

My favorite is the one that reminds me why I fell in love with movies in the first place.

As much as I sometimes roll my eyes when Hollywood tries to manufacture nostalgia by endlessly recycling the icons of my childhood, I can’t deny how powerful genuine nostalgia can be. It’s not about intellectual property or marketing. It’s about remembering who you were the first time a movie completely swept you away.

That’s what Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom still does for me.

When the lights go down and the Paramount mountain fades into that opening musical number, I’m transported back to a crowded theater in the summer of 1984. I’m sitting beside my family. The world feels enormous. Adventure seems possible. Every corner promises another mystery waiting to be discovered.

Maybe Raiders of the Lost Ark is the greatest Indiana Jones movie.

But Temple of Doom will always be my Indiana Jones movie.

And sometimes, that’s an even more meaningful distinction.

History has a strange way of attaching itself to forgotten movies.

Most films are remembered because they were great, terrible, or wildly successful. Others disappear almost as quickly as they arrive, surviving only as obscure entries in an actor’s filmography or a director’s résumé. Hal Ashby’s Lookin’ to Get Out falls firmly into that second category.

Released in 1982, the gambling comedy starring Jon Voight, Burt Young, and Ann-Margret was a notorious box office failure and is largely forgotten today. Yet its production became tied to one of the darkest days in Las Vegas history through a coincidence so unsettling that it almost sounds fictional.

It all began with a simple observation.

A Movie the MGM Didn’t Want

In 1980, Hal Ashby headed to Las Vegas to direct Lookin’ to Get Out, a loose, shaggy comedy about two compulsive gamblers fleeing debts in New York and hoping to strike it rich in Nevada.

Ironically, the project was originally developed at MGM. The studio eventually backed away, reportedly uncomfortable with allowing its flagship MGM Grand Casino to serve as the backdrop for a movie centered on problem gambling. Even so, MGM still permitted the filmmakers to shoot extensively inside the casino and hotel.

That decision inadvertently preserved a remarkable snapshot of the Las Vegas Strip just weeks before history changed it forever.

A Production That Couldn’t Catch a Break

The production quickly became as chaotic as the lives of its fictional gamblers.

After finding a new home at Lorimar, a television company making an ambitious move into feature films, Lookin’ to Get Out encountered one setback after another. Ashby was simultaneously trying to complete post-production on Second-Hand Hearts, creating constant scheduling headaches.

Then came the 1980 Screen Actors Guild strike, which shut production down entirely.

What should have been a relatively straightforward shoot stretched across nearly six months before filming finally resumed in Las Vegas during November 1980.

The extended schedule would prove to be an extraordinary twist of fate.

“That’s Funny… There Are No Exits.”

While filming inside the MGM Grand, the production captured a Las Vegas that no longer exists.

The cameras rolled across the bustling casino floor, luxurious hotel interiors, and even a performance by Siegfried & Roy. Today those scenes serve as an accidental time capsule of the Strip at the dawn of the 1980s.

During the shoot, however, Hal Ashby noticed something that struck him as odd.

According to production designer Robert Boyle, who later recounted the moment to author Nick Dawson for Being Hal Ashby, the director looked around the casino and remarked:

“That’s funny… there are no exits.”

It was simply an observation.

No one thought much of it.

No one had any reason to.

The Day Everything Changed

Filming on Lookin’ to Get Out concluded on November 21, 1980.

That same morning, at approximately 7:10 a.m., a fire broke out inside a restaurant on the casino level of the MGM Grand.

The flames themselves never reached the upper hotel floors. The smoke did.

Fueled by combustible interior materials and carried through elevator shafts, ventilation systems, and other vertical openings, toxic smoke rapidly spread throughout the 26-story hotel. Guests sleeping dozens of floors above the fire suddenly found themselves trapped in smoke-filled hallways with little chance of escape.

By the time the disaster ended, 85 people were dead and hundreds more had been injured, making it the deadliest disaster in Nevada history at the time.

Investigators ultimately concluded that smoke—not flames—caused the overwhelming majority of deaths.

In retrospect, Ashby’s casual observation about the apparent lack of exits takes on an unsettling quality. He wasn’t predicting the future, nor was he identifying the technical failures that investigators would later document. Yet he instinctively noticed something about the building that later would become central to one of the worst hotel fires in modern American history.

A Disaster That Changed Las Vegas Forever

The MGM Grand fire transformed hotel safety across Nevada and eventually the United States.

Investigators found numerous deficiencies that contributed to the tragedy, including inadequate sprinkler protection in critical areas, combustible interior finishes, and building systems that allowed smoke to spread throughout the tower.

The resulting reforms dramatically changed building codes. Existing high-rise hotels were retrofitted with sprinkler systems, smoke control measures were strengthened, and fire safety standards became significantly more rigorous.

Modern visitors walking the Las Vegas Strip today are safer because of lessons learned from that terrible morning.

The Movie History Forgot

History remembers the MGM Grand fire.

Few people remember Lookin’ to Get Out.

When the film finally reached theaters in October 1982, audiences largely stayed away. Produced for approximately $18 million, it earned less than $1 million at the domestic box office and became one of the more expensive flops of the early 1980s. Even among Hal Ashby’s filmography, it remains one of his least-discussed works.

It was so thoroughly forgotten that when we covered the movies of October 1982 for Movies of the 80s on YouTube, we initially overlooked it ourselves.

Perhaps that’s fitting.

The film’s greatest historical significance has little to do with its story, its performances, or its disappointing box office. Instead, it survives because it happened to be filming inside the MGM Grand during the final days before tragedy struck.

History occasionally leaves forgotten movies behind.

Sometimes, however, it leaves them with an unforgettable story.

The Jazz Singer made money. It made nearly $30 million dollars against a $15 million dollar budget. And yet, it’s still a flop because few careers survived the release of this movie. Neil Diamond’s film career ended, as did that of Lucie Arnaz, and Sir Laurence Olivier openly, publicly trashed the movie. Sometimes a flop is more. about perception than business.

You’d Think This Couldn’t Miss

Some movies are doomed by bad ideas.

Others are doomed by bad timing.

And then there are movies like The Jazz Singer (1980), which had nearly everything going for them and still somehow fell apart.

On paper, the ingredients looked irresistible. Hollywood would remake one of the most important films ever made—the 1927 classic that helped usher in the era of talking pictures. The lead role would go to Neil Diamond, one of the biggest recording artists in the world. To add prestige, producers cast Sir Laurence Olivier as the stern cantor father whose expectations drive the story’s emotional conflict.

It sounded like a blockbuster waiting to happen.

Instead, it became a production plagued by legal battles, rewrites, director changes, reshoots, and a leading man who was still learning how to act while cameras were rolling.

The finished film received harsh reviews, only modest box office, and quickly disappeared from the cultural conversation.

Ironically, almost everything people still remember from The Jazz Singer came from its soundtrack.

A Production That Could Never Get Started

Long before cameras rolled, the remake was already in trouble.

The rights to The Jazz Singer bounced between studios throughout the late 1970s. Warner Bros., United Artists, and eventually Associated Film Distribution all explored bringing the story back to the screen. Every change meant more negotiations, more delays, and more uncertainty.

By the time production finally moved forward, the project had already lost valuable momentum.

Budgets had increased, creative teams had shifted, and what should have been a prestige production already felt like a compromise.

Sometimes troubled productions begin on the first day of filming.

This one began years earlier.

The First Director Couldn’t Make It Work

Veteran director Sidney J. Furie came aboard hoping to modernize the story for contemporary audiences.

He immediately began rewriting the screenplay.

The traditional family drama was softened. The romance became more prominent. Scenes were continually adjusted to accommodate Neil Diamond’s strengths as a performer.

The constant revisions created uncertainty throughout the production.

Deborah Raffin, originally cast as Molly, eventually left the film, reportedly frustrated by the endless changes. She was replaced by Lucie Arnaz, who suddenly found herself stepping into a production already showing signs of instability.

Arnaz later admitted she was both excited and intimidated. Acting opposite Laurence Olivier would have been pressure enough. Doing it alongside a first-time movie star learning dramatic acting made the situation even more unpredictable.

As the rewrites continued, producers lost confidence in Furie’s direction.

By March 1980, he was gone.

\Richard Fleischer Was Asked to Save the Movie

Richard Fleischer wasn’t hired to direct The Jazz Singer.

He was hired to rescue it.

The veteran filmmaker later described inheriting a production that had largely gone off the rails. Storylines had shifted repeatedly, performances varied wildly from scene to scene, and much of what had already been filmed simply wasn’t working.

His solution was drastic.

Rather than trying to patch the existing footage together, Fleischer chose to start over.

Nearly ninety percent of the movie was reportedly reshot.

Even Laurence Olivier had to return and repeat much of his performance, extending both the schedule and the budget.

At that point, The Jazz Singer wasn’t just being completed.

It was being remade while it was already in production.

Neil Diamond Was Learning on the Job

Neil Diamond was unquestionably the reason the movie existed.

He was also its greatest gamble.

By 1980, Diamond was one of the biggest concert attractions in America. He could command an audience of thousands with little more than a spotlight and a microphone.

A movie camera demanded something entirely different.

Accounts from the production suggest Diamond often appeared uncomfortable during dramatic scenes. Furie tried reshaping sequences around his natural instincts, while Fleischer focused on coaching him through performances that required emotional subtlety rather than musical charisma.

One moment unexpectedly worked.

After flubbing a line, Diamond reportedly stormed back into the scene out of genuine frustration. Fleischer kept the take because the anger finally felt authentic.

Unfortunately, authentic moments like that were the exception rather than the rule.

Critics generally agreed that Diamond could sing almost anything.

Acting proved much harder.

Even Laurence Olivier Couldn’t Save It

If Neil Diamond represented youthful inexperience, Laurence Olivier represented the opposite.

At seventy-three, the legendary actor was working selectively while managing ongoing health issues. His casting gave the production instant credibility.

Whether he believed in the film is another matter.

Richard Fleischer later recalled an incident in which Olivier was allegedly overheard joking about the movie in a restaurant before its release. The story reached the press, creating an embarrassing public relations headache.

To Fleischer’s surprise, Olivier later sent a lengthy handwritten apology insisting he had never intended to damage the production.

Whatever happened behind closed doors, audiences weren’t impressed.

Many reviewers criticized Olivier’s theatrical performance and wandering accent, arguing that even one of cinema’s greatest actors couldn’t overcome the material surrounding him.

Critics Saw a Vanity Project

When The Jazz Singer opened in December 1980, critics were merciless.

Many felt the film never justified remaking such a landmark classic.

Neil Diamond’s acting drew the harshest criticism, while the screenplay was dismissed as overly sentimental and dramatically lifeless. Reviewers frequently suggested the film felt less like a genuine drama than an expensive commercial for Diamond’s music.

The box office wasn’t disastrous.

Produced for roughly $13 million, the film earned about $27 million worldwide.

But those numbers fell well short of expectations for a project carrying one of Hollywood’s most famous titles and one of popular music’s biggest stars.

It wasn’t a financial collapse.

It simply wasn’t the hit everyone expected.

The Soundtrack Became the Real Success Story

Then something unexpected happened.

The movie faded.

The music didn’t.

“Love on the Rocks” became a Top 5 hit.

“Hello Again” reached the Top 10.

“America” evolved into one of Neil Diamond’s signature songs, remaining a concert staple for decades.

The soundtrack sold millions of copies and became one of the biggest albums of Diamond’s career.

Today, many people know those songs by heart without realizing they were written for a movie that has largely disappeared from popular memory.

That’s a remarkable legacy.

The soundtrack became a classic.

The film became a footnote.

Why The Jazz Singer Still Fascinates

Hollywood has always believed that the right star can sell almost anything.

The Jazz Singer is a reminder that star power isn’t always enough.

The production became trapped in an endless cycle of delays, rewrites, recasting, director changes, and expensive reshoots. Neil Diamond struggled to carry a dramatic feature. Laurence Olivier couldn’t elevate material that never fully came together. By the time audiences finally saw the finished product, it already felt like a movie assembled through compromise rather than conviction.

And yet, calling The Jazz Singer a complete failure doesn’t feel entirely fair.

The film may have faded, but its music became part of American pop culture.

Few flops leave behind three hit singles.

There are very few horror villains who have survived being shot, stabbed, blown up, burned alive, decapitated, and rebooted multiple times.

Michael Myers has managed all of the above.

The remarkable thing isn’t that Michael Myers keeps coming back. Horror icons are famous for refusing to stay dead. The remarkable thing is that his creator didn’t want him to come back at all.

When audiences settled into theaters for Halloween III: Season of the Witch in 1982, they expected another night of stalking, suspense, and William Shatner masks. Instead, John Carpenter handed them a science-fiction horror film about killer Halloween masks, ancient Celtic magic, android assassins, and a cheerful Irish toy manufacturer with genocidal ambitions.

It was one of the boldest creative swings in franchise history.

It was also one of Hollywood’s biggest miscalculations.

John Carpenter Had Already Ended the Story

By the end of Halloween II, Michael Myers had been shot repeatedly, blinded, and engulfed in an explosion that consumed both him and Dr. Sam Loomis.

As far as John Carpenter was concerned, that was the ending.

Michael Myers was dead.

More importantly, Carpenter believed the story was dead.

He had never envisioned Halloween becoming an endless series about one unstoppable killer. His idea was far more ambitious. He wanted Halloween to become an annual anthology—a collection of standalone horror stories linked only by the Halloween holiday itself. Every October would bring a new nightmare with new characters, new mythology, and a completely different kind of terror.

In 1982, Season of the Witch was intended to prove that concept.

Instead, it proved something else entirely.

Michael Myers Haunts a Movie He Isn’t Even In

Technically, Michael Myers appears in Halloween III.

Sort of.

Footage from the original Halloween plays on a television as if it were simply another horror movie inside this universe. It’s a clever wink from Carpenter, but it also highlights the elephant in the room.

Michael isn’t stalking babysitters.

He isn’t lurking in the shadows.

He isn’t coming.

That absence hangs over every frame of the film.

Audiences didn’t walk into theaters asking whether Season of the Witch worked as its own story. They spent the entire running time wondering when Michael Myers would finally show up. When he never did, disappointment quickly turned into rejection.

Today, it’s difficult to separate the film from the expectations that surrounded it.

Halloween Becomes Corporate Horror

Viewed on its own merits, Season of the Witch is unlike any other entry in the series.

Tom Atkins stars as Dr. Dan Challis, a hard-drinking physician who stumbles into a conspiracy surrounding Silver Shamrock Novelties, the company responsible for the hottest Halloween masks in America.

Silver Shamrock doesn’t simply sell masks.

It sells obsession.

Its relentless television commercials bombard children with the unforgettable jingle:

“Happy, Happy Halloween…”

Parents rush to stores.

Children beg for the newest masks.

Advertising becomes hypnosis.

The real villain isn’t just Conal Cochran, played with gleeful menace by Dan O’Herlihy. It’s consumer culture itself.

Long before smartphones, social media algorithms, and targeted advertising, Halloween III imagined a world where television could manipulate an entire generation into participating in its own destruction.

The masks don’t kill children.

Marketing does.

It’s an unexpectedly sharp idea buried inside an unapologetically bizarre horror movie.

Brilliant…and Completely Bonkers

None of this means Halloween III is above criticism.

Far from it.

The pacing wanders.

The romance between Dan Challis and Ellie Grimbridge asks audiences to ignore an uncomfortable age gap and accept that every woman Tom Atkins meets immediately falls for his rugged, whiskey-soaked charm.

Then there are the killer robots.

And Stonehenge.

And a villain whose master plan involves using fragments of an ancient monument to murder millions of children through novelty masks.

It’s one of those plots that somehow becomes even stranger the more anyone tries to explain it.

Yet Dan O’Herlihy commits to every ridiculous moment with complete sincerity. As Conal Cochran, he isn’t chewing scenery so much as joyfully redecorating it. His grandfatherly charm only makes the character more unsettling. He smiles, jokes, gives factory tours, and discusses mass child sacrifice with the enthusiasm of someone unveiling a new breakfast cereal.

The result is ridiculous.

It’s also strangely unforgettable.

The Franchise Blinked

The failure of Halloween III permanently changed the series.

Carpenter’s anthology experiment was abandoned almost immediately.

When Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers arrived six years later, its title doubled as an apology.

The message couldn’t have been clearer:

“Don’t worry. Michael’s back.”

The anthology concept disappeared.

The franchise became permanently tied to one masked killer.

Whether that was the right decision depends on how much you love Michael Myers, but it closed the door on one of horror’s most fascinating “what ifs.”

Final Thoughts

Time has been kinder to Halloween III: Season of the Witch than audiences were in 1982.

Today, many horror fans appreciate it precisely because it dared to be different. Removed from the impossible expectation of replacing Michael Myers, it stands as an eccentric blend of science fiction, folk horror, corporate satire, and unapologetic B-movie weirdness.

More importantly, it represents the road not taken.

John Carpenter tried to save Halloween from becoming repetitive by reinventing it before repetition ever set in.

Audiences had other ideas.

Michael Myers survived the explosion at the end of Halloween II not because John Carpenter resurrected him, but because moviegoers refused to let him stay dead.

In the end, Halloween III wasn’t the future of the franchise.

It was the brief moment when the franchise tried to escape its own shadow—and discovered that some monsters are simply too iconic to leave behind.
